　車谷は、怨念の作家である。情念などという言葉では表現できない。へびに出会った場所を一生覚えていると書く。人の暗闇を凝視する。
　車谷は現代そのものを恨んでいる。なんだか知らないが業の塊である。いや、誰も等しく背負っている業を徹底的に自覚した異形のモノである。
　ひょっとして晩年婚の相手は、この小説に出てくる詩の作者か？他の作品と読み合わせると、この内容がほぼ事実に近いことが分かる。浮浪者寸前の関西時代を書いたものだ。
　この作品が直木賞という大衆にもっとも受け入れられるべき作品に与えられる賞を取ったとは信じられない。芥川賞の一部選考委員に嫌われたという怨念が、直木賞を射止めさせたのだ。
　真実は人を打つ。打って感動を誘うこともあるし、打ちのめしてしまうこともある。本作は後者だ。読んで毒気に当てられてぐったりした。しかしまた、車谷の他作品を読むだろう。闇に潜むものに背を向けるのは、なおさら怖いから。

「どんな人間にも本来、生死に意味も、価値もない。」
「偽りとは人が為すと書く。」
私小説家である作者が、表層的な道徳や価値観を徹底的に否定して生きている姿に凄みすら覚えた。どこか人恋しさの裏返しに写る太宰治の小説よりも、ずっと孤高な感を受ける私小説。車谷長吉は文学者としていろんな意味ですごいところにいるのではないかと思った。

しかしながら、他人との関係性から生ずる感情など捨てたはずの主人公がアヤちゃんとの最後の数日間の中で見せる感情のブレに、切なさが滲む。作者が捨てられない「人間であることの何か」がそこには明確にあった。

車谷長吉という作家の名前も知りませんでしたし、赤目四十八瀧心中未遂という名の小説も聞いたことがありませんでした。ただ、どこかで、尼崎のことを書いた小説とあったのを思い出し、たまたま、市の図書館で見かけたとき、借りて読んだのです。すごい迫力の小説、人間の何もかもをこんなに掘り下げて書けるものなのかなと感動しました。

登場人物と尼崎（アマ）と関西の混沌とした人の渦が一つになって、
立ち上がって動き出してくるという感じ、ゴッホの絵のように体にズシンと響く小説でした。図書館で本を返して、早速にｱﾏｿﾞﾝへ彼の文庫本を申し込みました。
