殺人事件や誘拐だけがミステリではなく、日常の中にあふれる謎にミステリの原点があることをエッセイを通して語る著書。

ただ、エッセイより作品のほうが数段楽しいのは事実。

1996年に中央公論社から出た単行本の、角川文庫への採録。
　「謎とはどういうものであるのか」を豊富な実例を挙げつつ論じた著書。実に様々な角度から謎が取り上げられている。意外性とは何か、トリックを物語に溶け込ませる方法、先行トリックとの差をどのようにつけるか、などなど。
　ミステリだけではなく、手品の本だとか、落語、新聞記事まで例にされている点が面白かった。本格ミステリとかトリックとかは、一見、我々の生活とはまったく異なった世界原理を持っているように見える。しかし、謎は日常生活のそこかしこに潜んでいるのである。問題は、我々が物事をどのように観察するかということになる。あるいは観察方法、提示の仕方が謎を生むのだと言ってもいい。
　謎の原理を提示してくれた本書は、ミステリ読みに必読の一冊だろう。また、北村薫の小説世界を理解する上でも欠かせない本であると思う。
