日中国交回復三〇年を経て、当時の田中首相・大平外相が北京を訪問し、周恩来総理らと会談した日中国交回復交渉、和製キッシンジャーと称された竹入公明党委員長と周恩来との秘密会談の記録が公開された。日本政府、外務省が台湾との関係をどのように扱ったかを示す会談記録・文書も入手することができた。六年後の日中平和友好条約締結交渉に関する日中事務次官レベルの会談と外相会談も公開された。解題と注釈を加えてそれらの文書を再現し(記録編)、会談の関係者の寄稿・インタビューによる証言を集め(証言編)、日中国交回復から平和有効条約締結にいたる外交交渉過程とその歴史的意味を、専門研究者の立場から考察する(考証編)。新たな日中関係の一歩を踏み出すために心血を注いだ先人たちの決意と気迫に思いを致し、過去の不正常な状態を克服して未来に立ち向かうために再検証すべき課題が、ここに凝縮されている。
