美しくも醜い都市について、マルコポーロがフビライ＝ハーンに語る形式で描かれています。
この小説はその淡白にして優美な描写と移ろいゆく断片を眺めて楽しむ小説だと思いました。

時代性、物語性から離れた情景的断片で構成され、
瑞々しい情景、剥き出しの暗部、都市の記憶を語りながら、

それぞれの都市が断片として、物語を創出することもなく流れていくナレーション。

私は読み終わって、その情景がフラッシュバックする不思議な感覚にとらわれました。
ちょっと不思議な小説も読んでみたいと思っている方に、お勧めします。

常用漢字外の漢字にルビが振られていないものが多く、最初の方は読みづらかったです(慣れれば読めます)。

それと文庫本としては値段が高く感じられたので星は４つとしました。

内容紹介にもある通り、本書はマルコ・ポーロが旅で見聞してきた都市について、フビライに語るという形式を取った小説だ。
著者の想像力が組み立てた、摩訶不思議な都市の数々は、それぞれが独立した物語としても展開できそうな強い個性を持っていて、飽きさせない。
小説を進行させる、ポーロとフビライによる独特のテンポの漫才（！？）のような不思議なノリも心地いい。
奔放な奇想が詰まった傑作のコンパクトな文庫サイズでの刊行を喜びたい。

散文詩と都市論の融合したような小説です。
マルコ・ポーロは過去・未来・現在に浮かんでは消えていく諸都市の見聞をフビライ汗に語ります。

マルコ・ポーロとフビライ汗の対話によって枠物語となっていますが、
読み進めていく内に読者はさらなる都市の入れ子の中へ迷い込んでいくようです。
これらの見た事も聞いた事もないような、複雑な都市群は極めて空想的でありながら、
都市の本質そのものでもあるように思えます。
空気のような軽さと生々しさ、常に相反するものがお互いを取り込み合う空想都市。

訳も美しいです。修飾語で編み上げられたような原文を想像します。
果てしない空虚と飽和にめまいのするような幻想小説でした。
