1976(昭和51)年長野県生まれ。1999年慶應義塾大学法学部政治学科卒業。2003年慶應義塾大学大学院法学研究科政治学専攻博士課程修了。イリノイ大学(米国)客員研究員などを経て、武蔵野学院大学大学院准教授、博士(法学)。近代日本政治史専攻(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

西南戦争の経過とその時代背景を丹念に追った秀作です。自由民権運動の萌芽との関連も理解できます。
またたくさんの資料の中から、その時々の将兵や政治家の気持ちや言葉を選択・引用しているため、この種の本にしてはフィクションでないのに臨場感があります。
読まれる際には、九州の地図(地形の判る色付きのもの)を用意し、さらに本書をめくって地図のページに付箋をつけておくことをお勧めします。

最後の内戦と言われる西南戦争に関する最新の通史本である。

新書としてコンパクトに纏められているだけではない、西南戦争の薩軍の裏面や、西郷が結果的には表に出てこなかった事。熊本城篭城戦で場内は飢餓状態であった事などエピソードなども盛り込まれている。西南戦争は事実上の明治維新の総決算と言ってもいいのではないだろうか。それが西郷・木戸･大久保といった明治維新三傑の寿命すら縮めてしまい、それぞれの決着をつけて維新の時代から消え行く。

後に武闘では時代が変革ができず、本書に於いても自由民権運動へのシフト化というのは歴史の持つアイロニーであり、歴史はかく発展するという事なのか。著者の歴史観に好感が持てる。

巻末の参考資料の多さに圧巻されます。

著者も述べている通り、例えば農民一揆との関連性などを欠いているが故に、中心的記述が（薩軍‐官軍関係中心の）戦史・政治史に偏してしまっている憾みはある。とは言っても、新書の限定された枠内で、相当に広い視野をもって西南戦争を描ききっている。最新の西南戦争通史として“定本”と見なしうる一冊が出たと評価したい。

断片的・個別的なエピソードや研究が西南戦争のどこに位置づけられるか、という観点から本書を眺めると、きっと興味深い歴史の読みが可能となるだろう。
