発表当時からボロクソ言われてきたキャプテン・ビヨンド2ndアルバム。邦題は「衝撃の極地」。1曲目から爽やかなアコースティック・ギターが聴こえてきて、1stのハード・ロックが更にエスカレートするだろうと期待していたファンにとっては全く「衝撃の極地」だった。
1stで物凄い変拍子ドラムを叩いていたボビー・コールドウェルが抜けたこと、作曲も前作のコールドウェル＆ロッド・エヴァンスからベースのリー・ドーマンにチェンジしたことなどがマイナス要因だと言われることが多かった。しかし最近のドーマンのインタビューによれば、1st録音時にはドーマンとラインハルトはアイアン・バタフライとの間で契約上の争いがあったためにクレジットされていないだけで、全曲4人の共作だったらしい。逆に2ndは、エヴァンスがディープ・パープルとの間に訴訟があり、ラインハルトもアイアン・バタフライとの争いが片付かず、ドーマンだけ自由だったので彼の名義になったということでこれも実態は3人の共作。
確かにコールドウェルが抜けサウンドの衝撃力は弱まってはいるが、サイドにパーカッションとピアノが入ったことで前作でも感じられたラテン風味がグッと強まり、スベイシーな音響も奏功して、スペース・ラテン・ロックというコンセプトはより具体化している。何よりも強調したいのは、5).Starglow Energyの素晴らしさ。数あるハード・ロック・バラードの中でも名曲だ。ヘビメタ流の大仰でウェットなそれとは違う、乾いた叙情性とも言うべきキャプテン・ビヨンドの特徴が遺憾なく発揮されている。夜中に部屋の灯りを消して、ステレオのインジケーターの心細い光を見ながら聴くと、小さなロケットに乗って宇宙空間に一人で取り残されたような気になる。この1曲だけでもこのアルバムを聴く価値があるというものだ。

インターネットラジオから流れてきた「Sufficiently Breathless」
の爽やかなサウンドが一発で気に入りました。曲名しか解らなかっ
たのでネットで検索しまくってようやくこのＣＤが購入できました。
一緒に買ったファーストは古臭いハードロックだったので自分的に
はちょっとパスでしたが、そういう音楽が好きな人の間では有名み
たいです。

１９７３年発売の元ディープパープルの初代ボーカリスト・ロッドエヴァンス率いるキャプテンビヨンドセカンドアルバム・・・迷いがあったのか、急激にパワーダウンした１枚。アメリカ市場をさらに意識したのか、パーカッションをメンバーに補充し大きくサウンドが変化してしまいました。ファーストはいい意味でブリティッシュとアメリカンロックが噛み合っていましたが、このアルバムはちぐはぐになってしまいました・・・もったいない！！邦題は「衝撃の極地」・・・まったくその通りになっていまいました。もちろんパープルマニアは必須のアルバムです・・・ロッドはこれで脱退！！
