　20数年来の我が愛読誌『ビッグコミックオリジナル』にこの作品の連載が始まり、しばらくは「どうなることか」と固唾を呑んで見守っていました。と言うのも、僕には尾瀬あきらさんの名作『夏子の酒』を読んで大いに感動した過去があるので、再び酒造りを主題にした作品で前作同様に酔えるだろうかと思ったからです。
　しかし、その心配は杞憂でした。出雲の酒蔵で日本酒造りに挑む日系3世のアメリカ人男性クロードを軸に、母親と共に居酒屋を経営する女性・せつ、クロードの親友で酒造家の若専務・宏、こだわりの酒屋店主・安本、そして戦前に生にこだわり酒を造っていた老杜氏・正司、その息子で米作りに丹精を込める勝弘など、出揃った役者たちがうまく絡み始めて俄然物語が面白くなってきたのです。
　『蔵人』も『夏子の酒』と同様に、お酒を「作る」「売る」「供す」ことや、その原料となる米を作ることに対して、真摯なこだわりと深い愛情を持つ個性的な人たちがぶつかり合い、互いを高め合い、そして支え合って生きていくという展開になっています。そこには労働の喜びや、自然との関わりの荘厳さ、人間同士のつながりの素晴らしさなど、僕たちの人生において最も基本的で重要なことがストレートに描かれています。でも雰囲気が重くならないのは、尾瀬さんの描く人物や風景の絵の線が柔らかいことと、頑張り屋でとても魅力的だけど、どこかズッコケたところのある爽やかな女性・せつの存在があるからでしょう。
　こういう作品を読むと、また美味しいお酒が飲みたくなってくるから困りものです（笑）。連載中の作品は評価するのが難しいのでレビューは書かないつもりだったのですが、今回は作品へのエールのつもりで書かせていただきました。

舞台は島根県。

そこにある日本酒を作っている蔵に外国人が訪れます。
彼の祖母は、外国に渡った日本人で、昔、日本で日本酒を造っていた父親の蔵を想いながら孫である彼に伝えます。

近年、日本酒離れが多い日本で、外国人が日本酒の作りに参加するという観点は
「夏子の酒」を書いた原作者ならではの作品だと思います。

無くなってしまった、自分の蔵を巡る修行の日々。日本語もわからない異文化の中
どうやって酒作りにクロードが携わっていくのか楽しみな一巻です。

　シリーズ途中の作品なので完結してから紹介しようかと思っていたのですが、人気が出てきたのかまだまだ続きそうので途中でいったん紹介を。
　主人公のクロードは外国人。
　彼の祖母はアメリカに渡った日本人で、彼はその祖母から日本の蔵のことを聞いており、日本で酒造りをするために日本に渡って来ました。しかし、すでにその蔵は日本になかったのです。しかし、それでもクロードは、酒造りの道に進み日本で酒について学び始めます。彼が学ぶ事になった蔵の若専務の宏や、その専務の元婚約者で居酒屋を母親と営む女性せつ、蔵の杜氏達、そして新聞社の記者。魅力的な人物が繰り広げる、熱い、でもどこかノスタルジックでせつない物語は、テーマが酒であるからかも知れないけれど、日本酒がよく合うような気がします。
　大人ならではの挫折や、こだわりや、打算があったりして、高校生たちの青春ものとは深さが全然違うけれど根底には素晴らしい酒を作りたいというその一点に向けて協力したり悩んだり苦しんだりする姿はやはり青春ものなのだなと感じる作品です。
　同じビックコミックオリジナルでは、さきに「あんどーなつ」の方が貫地谷しほりさん主演でドラマ化するようですが、こちらも注目をもっと浴びていい作品だと思います。
