毎月の小遣いでスヌーピーのマンガを少しずつ買い揃えていたのは、今から30年以上前の高校
時代のことです。
「英語の勉強を兼ねて」が当時の私のねらいだったのですけど、日本語に訳されてもストーリーが
理解できないものが半分くらいはあったことを覚えています。
スヌーピーやほかの人物らの表情で雰囲気をつかみ取り、わかったようなフリをしていた私です。

今こうして河合さんと谷川さんのお話を読むと、マンガの背景に当時の私ではわかり得なかった
アメリカ社会が描かれていることを知ることができました。
かなりアメリカナイズされているといわれる日本ですが、真似なくてよいところは真似る必要など
ないのでは？
嬉しい時には「嬉しい」と、悲しい時には「悲しい」と言えること、そう言う周囲の声に耳を傾け、
心を寄せられる人間でありたいと思いました。

おちこぼれ、バンザイ！というタイトルの文字が大きく目に飛び込んできますが、おちこぼれというより、スヌーピーの漫画やその登場人物のキャラクターを読みながらの、河合隼雄さんと谷川俊太郎さんによる対談です。

難しいことはいわないのですが、選ぶ言葉が自分の身によりそっている対談は、さすがの二人といった具合で進んでいきます。

スヌーピーというマンガも二人の言葉のように、頭よりも体の中でアルアルと感じてしまうところがあり（そう、なので、腑に落ちるという言葉を使いたくない気がしてしまいます）、もちろん子どもも楽しいだろうし、大人もハッとする内容です。

スヌーピーというマンガの入門書として最適です。
