なんとも有名な司馬遼太郎氏ですが、実はこれとても好きです。モンゴルの話。読むと無性に草原が懐かしいところであるような、行かなくてはならないような気になります。案内人として登場する女性の半生も綴っています。モンゴルは中国、旧ソ連に挟まれ、社会主義になった国。ただ、彼らの故郷は草原にある。さらりと印象深い言葉で書かれていて読みやすい。

冒頭
　　　　　空想につきあっていただきたい。
　　　　　モンゴル高原が、天にちかいということについてである。

この作品に登場する「ツェベクマ」さんという人は歴史に華々しい名を
残した人ではない。ホテルの渉外担当を最後に現役を退いた女性の物語
である。
筆者のモヤモヤとしたモンゴルの歴史の空想がやがて「ツェベクマ」さ
んの人生に目をやったときようやくひとつの形となる。
人の好悪を判断するときに我々は往々にして目先だけで判断してしまう。

筆者は歴史の靄のなかからある女性を理解しようとしている。
途方もない手間のかかる作業である。
美しい一代記であると思う。

あまり断定は出来ないがこの作品はやはり司馬文学を代表するものではないだろうか。その読後感はモンゴルを象徴したような女主人公のツェベクマさんの「歴史をものともしない」生き様に感動するところから醸成されてゆく。

司馬さんは小さい頃からよほどモンゴルが好きだったとみえる。その少年の夢を１回目は1973年（昭和48年）50歳のときに、2回目は17年後の1990年（平成2年）67歳のときに実現した。モンゴル取材旅行である。そして2年後の平成4年69歳でこの本を出版している。亡くなる4年前であった。

ツェベクマさんの身の上話を一緒に聞いて嗚咽した亜細亜大の先生がいた。その鯉渕先生によると「草原の記」を書き終えた後に届いた手紙には「原稿を書くという苦痛を越えて、少年の日から持ち続けていたモンゴルへの思いが、これで成仏できたと思っています」とあったらしい。50年余の間も成仏できなかったほどの想いとは！

「気体のようなものを書いている」という。詩的な心情を散文に直す、固体化するという作業が難渋している風に書かれている。が実はその詩的な心情の中に文学的価値、いや司馬さんが忌み嫌う「思想」が潜んでいるような気がしてならない。

といっても昭和の戦争の経過と原因をすごく簡潔正確に書き切っているしご自分の戦車部隊の経験も具体的だ。しかしそうゆう戦争の歴史も「蒙古茸だ」と比喩してしまう。はかなく過ぎ行くモンゴルの風土のように、オゴタイの寡欲のように。

解説文は山崎正和氏が毎日新聞に書いた書評を司馬さんが懇請して掲載されたものと聞く。その山崎氏が追悼文の中で若き日の狂乱の時代に「半ば無意識的に司馬さんは歴史から離れて悠久の時間にあこがれたのではなかったか。それがアジアの中で最も歴史的な熱狂に遠く自然の循環のイメージに近いモンゴルに司馬さんをひきつけたのではないか」といっている。自然の循環のイメージというのがいい。
