若きウェルテルの悩みを多感な１５歳の頃に読んで、２年間ほどずっと愛読していました。最後にこの小説を読んで自殺をする読者が出ないように警告するようなあとがきもあり、当時に物凄い影響力があったことを思わせます。私個人は人妻に恋した経験こそありませんが、２０代くらいまではこのウェルテルの悩みに痛いほど共感し、切なさに胸が締め付けられる思いがしたのを覚えていますが、今現在、恋することと愛することの境界線が自分の中に消えつつあるのを感じながら、恋愛に苦しむことはこれから先はもうないであろうと感じるのは、自分がもう「若き」人間ではないのかな？と思いつつも、相手に振り回されるのは愛ではないのではないかな？と感じてもいます。でも、ウェルテルのような純粋な恋愛の気持ちだけはいつまでも持ち続けていたいと思います。

「私は別れて、別れ際に、今日のうちにもう一度お目にかかりたい、と頼んだ。ロッテはそれをきいてくれた。私は行った、このときから、日も月も星も依然としてその運行をつづけながら、私にとっては昼も夜もなくなり、全世界は身のまわりから姿を没した。」（岩波文庫42ページ） 　ゲーテは「もし生涯に『ヱルテル』が自分のために書かれたと感じるような時期がないなら、その人は不幸だ」と言っている。まさにその通り！

　恋に気づいた日、その本人にしか知りようがない美しい物語が残される。ゲーテのこのくだりはそんな美しい一日を書き留めていてくれる。まだ経験したことのない人にはあこがれを、すでに経験した人には感慨をもたらす。さすが文豪ゲーテ。

余談：『若きウェルテルの悩み』高橋義孝訳の新潮文庫版では36ページ。どの翻訳に先に出会うかは、運命としかいいようがない。ついているかついていないか。岩波文庫に先に出会った私は幸運だった。みなさんにも同じ幸運がありますように。

　この作品の筋だけに目を奪われると、肝心なものがわからない。
　読み返すたび、ゲーテの言葉には何一つ無駄がない、ということがわかる。細かな描写一つ一つ、すべてが有機的につながり、作品に厚みと重みを与えている。
　こういう作品を、名作というのでしょう。
