　上巻のレビューに記したことは繰り返すまい。この漫画が、再び大判で読めるというのはなんという幸せだろう。小型版では伝わりきらないものがきっとある。漫画にはある程度の版型は必要なのだ。しかし、出来ればオリジナルの総集編にあった呉智英の不朽の名解説も復活させて欲しかった。僕は漫画の解説で、これほど熱い文章を他に知らない。２０００字を超える解説は、こう語った。
「連載終了が近づくにつれ、『自虐の詩』の緊張度は最大限に高まった。毎号毎号、この作品だけのために「週刊宝石」を読んだ。私だけではない。ほとんど毎号のように『自虐の詩』を読んで号泣した。これも私だけではない。電車の中で嗚咽が止まらなかったという男がいた。４コママンガを読んで泣いているのと、同僚から不審がられたＯＬがいた。・・・・・・驚くことに、この『自虐の詩』は、連載中も、また単行本化された時も、あらゆるマンガ賞が候補作にさえ挙げなかった。世界一のマンガ大国が、足元の大傑作に一顧だに与えない。これが現実である。しかし、今、『自虐の詩は』総集編としてここにある。読者よ、この不幸中の幸いを喜ぼう。そして、感動にうちふるえよ。」
　この解説に賛同の大拍手を贈りたいと、読み終わった時、僕は心からそう思った。これはそういうマンガでした。

10年前に初めて読んだときから私にとって特別な作品であり続けた漫画です。
今では読み返すこともなくなりましたが、「自虐の詩」を思うたび、幸江と熊本さん、イサオを思い出すたびに涙が目にたまるのは何故でしょう。
物語はある種ステレオタイプでありがちなんですが、物語が進むにつれ登場人物が泣き、笑い、もがく姿が圧倒的な物語の進行の中にいきいきとなされてきます。「切って血が出る物語」とはまさにこのような作品をいうのでしょう。
「おかあちゃんへ」とだけ宛名に書かれた手紙を出す幸江。
川原で幸江を殴る熊本さん。
これ以上の愛があるでしょうか。
物語後半の幸江という人間の姿は作者、業田良家も思いもよらなかったんじゃないかと思います。

この概ね傑作といえる作品に就いては、ラストの科白（結論）が決定的にダメだ。
「人生には全て意味がある」という奴だ。これはイデオロギー的にいっても、最近流行の「夢を持て」という類の文句と同断である。
人生に意味などない。そもそも「意味」とは、常に文脈に依存する。単独的な意味というものは言語矛盾なのだ。世間や社会、それが各人生の文脈である。主人公が最終的に「意味がある」と感得するところの意味とは、実は「人生などというものに意味はない、意味とは社会が強制付与するものだ。それはさしづめ勝ち組・負け組といった経済原理に乗っかったものだ。そう人生に意味などない。それは誰にとってもそうなのだ。私は今まで意味というものを追い求めて生きてきた。しかし、それは物質的な豊かさと不離のものだった。それではお金なのか。違うんだ。そうではない。いっそのこと人生に意味なんてない。そう言おう。意味なんてないけど、日々を生きていく。そのことが何事かなんだ」といっているのに等しいと思う。
そうであるのに、「意味がある」と語らせてはいけない。
ある手帖の出版社が毎年募集している一般人の名言のなかに、「お前は意味だけで生きているのか」という警句があった。これは深く、重い言葉だ。こちらの方が正しい。政治的にはどうかしらんが、人間実存に即して正しいと思わせる。
