死ぬと決めた人間にとっての世界は、生きようとしていたときとは違うものになる。たいていの場合、人は必死に生きようするなかさまざまな障害に出会って苦しむのだろうが、本書の主人公は死ぬことを邪魔されて苦しむ。そんな状況下で生じる滑稽さのあらゆる可能性を尽くそうとするように出来事が描かれていく。ただ、僕にはその滑稽さが多少すべっているようにも感じられた…　再読したらシニカルな構造の違う顔が浮上ってくるかもしれない。
主人公はひたすら死へと向かっているけれども、自殺を暗に美化してそのまわりで紡がれる物語に比べたら断然に健康的だし、前向きに感じられる。死を感じて生を充実させるといった話ではないが、それよりもうひとつ深いところで生を描いた小説だと思った。死ぬためにもこれだけ生きなければならないという意味も含めて。

主人公の自殺への道程を描いた名作は古今少なくない。漱石の「こころ」、大岡昇平の「花影」、トルストイの「アンナ・カレーニナ」など、枚挙の暇がないほどである。しかし、冒頭で自殺を決心した主人公がそれを決行するまでの1週間をつぶさに描ききった小説というのはこの「自由死刑」ぐらいなのではあるまいか。

また、このような深刻なテーマを扱う「自由死刑」ではあるが、島田氏特有の軽妙さは健在である。舌を巻くしかない華麗なレトリックと、思わずにやりとさせる諧謔に満ちた物語を、読者は純粋に楽しめば良い。しかし、読後に考えさせられること、感じさせられることはきっと少なくないはずである。これは単なるスタイリッシュなドタバタではない。死を背負った人間の根源的な哀しみに限りなく肉薄した稀有の喜劇である。

そういった意味では、この「自由死刑」は所謂自殺小説の一つの頂点を為しているといっても過言ではないと思うのである。

　死さえもがどこまでも可能な限り金に替えられてしまう。自分の意志で7日後に自殺すると決めた男が、その7日間、自由を全うするどころか、自分の死がどんどん金に替えられてゆき、またその金によって縛られて身動きが取れなくなってゆく。と書いてしまうとどうしようもなく陳腐な話に思えてくるが、そんなことはない。チャップリンが主人公を演じたらしっくり来そうな、現代の喜劇。
