「あなたの魂に安らぎあれ」「帝王の殻」に続く，火星三部作の最後の一冊になります．前二作を読んだときには，はっきりと謎とは意識していなかった謎が解かれ，ピースがはまるようにきっちりと納まる様子は爽快です．
三作の物語の時間は発表とちょうど逆順です．「膚の下」から80年ほど経過して「帝王の殻」，さらに120年ほど後の話が「あなたの魂に安らぎあれ」となるようです．
アンドロイドとは何なのか，エンズビルとは？　そして人間と機械知性との過去とは？
「膚の下」を読んでから前二作を読み返してみると，また味わい深いものがあります．
とにかく長いです．ハードカバー二段組みで684ページはなかなか読み応えがあります．なにしろ本の厚みが3~4cmありますから．寝転がって読むのは少し辛い一冊です．

~　荒れ果てたした地球を逃げ、火星に移住した「人間」。地球を復興するために造られた「機械人（ロボット）」。その「機械人」を監視するために造られた「アートルーパー（人造人間）」。
「人間」、「機械人」、「アートルーパー」三者の交錯するそれぞれの想い。創造主である人間の予測を超え、成長（？）する「機械人」と「アートルーパー」。

　嗚呼、こんな話を描けるのは、今の日本SF界（というものが、今も存在していればの話ですが・・）では、もはやこの人だけでしょう。下手をすれば、ただの荒唐無稽で終わってしまう。かといって、設定や背景だけをハードにすれば、面白くない。ほんのの僅かな幅の上に存在する、「ハード・ファンタジー」とでも表現すればいいのでしょうか。

　メディアは違うものの、ほぼ同時期に「人間とそれ以外のもの」を表現しようとした作品（「イノセンス」＆「CASSHERN」）が世にでたのは、単なる偶然でしょうが、興味深い感じがします。ま、どちら良い（好き）かは、皆さんの判断におまかせしますが（笑）。

　ハードカバーで６００ページ以上にもわたる大作をたった２行のエピグラムで表現してしまう作者には、いつもながら脱帽します。
「われらはおまえたちを創った。おまえたちはなにを創るのか」
最近の私たちは、壊してばかりで、なにかを創っているのでしょうか？~

神林氏は古典的な「人間」とは何か、を問うSF作家で、トリッキーなストーリー展開に陥らず、大きな物語を書いてきた。4月に発売された、700頁にも及ぶ大作はかなり楽しみながら、堪能できた。設定は人間、機械人、アートルーパーと称する人造人間の３タイプの示唆溢れる交流とその物語から綴られる。全編に渡って人造人間の日記、独白思考をミカに送ること(とは何か)を記述する構成になっている。勿論、SF的な展開：地球は人間によって壊滅状態であり、人類は逃亡を企てる一方、機械人は残された地球で工場を管理し、最後の手段としてナノテクノロジーがバイオ技術の代価案として発動された時、アートルーパー(主人公)は全く別のアイデアで新しい創造主たらんとする、という奇抜さにワクワクしてしまった。タイトルもいい。
