西南戦争＝私学校＝西郷隆盛、と単純に覚えていた私にとって、この出来事が日本が近代へと移行していく大きなポイントになっていることを改めて感じさせられた小説でした。また自らの死に場所を探すように薩摩へと帰っていく西郷隆盛の姿と共に、盟友でありながら自ら信じる志のため情を断ち切るように行動する大久保利通の姿も、深く印象に残るいい小説でした。

これは明治初期のほとんど全てが分かる本です。しかしデータをバンバン叩きつけるように書いてあるため、読むのにかなり気合いがひつようです。よってチャレンジスピリットが必要です。８巻からやっと西南戦争が始まります。そこからは面白いです。しかし７巻まではかなりの根性が必要です。私は一生に一度の勉強と思い読みきりました。確かに物凄く勉強にはなります。世に棲む日々や竜馬がゆくのような面白さはないです。青春なし恋愛なし女子供なし、まるで教科書みたい。ハードで骨太な地獄のデータ政治小説です。覚悟を決めて読むべし。

私は司馬遼太郎さんの大ファンである。その理由は登場人物がどれも魅力的で、歴史のダイナミズムを深く感じることができるからだ。あと国際政治のリアリズムの概念に則った、深い知性に裏付けられた描写も好きだ。この点は、他の作家には見られない特徴だからである。
　近代化の波の中、日本の植民地化を危惧する愛国的政治家が紆余曲折を経ながらも、強い信念に裏打ちされた行動力で明治政府を近代国家へと押し上げていく描写は圧巻だ。また、日本の伝統破壊と西欧近代化の狭間で葛藤する彼らの苦悩は、なんだかポスト近代化の今日という視点からみると、アイロニカルですらある。
　司馬作品は、私にとって聖書も同様である。この作品の物語の延長線上にある「坂の上の雲」（文春文庫）は、その日本の近代化の集大成を飾る、歴史小説の金字塔である。
