線が濃い、人間が熱い。存在し得ないくらい皆個性が強い。ありえない、ありえないのに、どうして涙が出るんだろう。

近年、映画の世界では『ブギーナイツ』『マグノリア』（P.T.アンダーソン）、『ハピネス』（トッド・ソロンズ）……、といった、ちょっと風変わりな群像劇が静かな流れとして定着しつつあるようだが、土田世紀はそういった映画が出てくる以前から、きわめて近いテイストを持った作品を、断続的に描き続けていた。この『編集王』は、そういった「土田流・群像劇」のひとつの集大成のような印象があり、時に『マグノリア』あたりを思い出させたりもするが、個人的には『マグノリア』よりも気に入っている（連載開始は『マグノリア』、さらには『ブギーナイツ』よりも前）。コミックス（第３巻）とは違い、第26話冒頭の『キャンディ・キャンディ』ラストの見開きが諸事情により掲載できず、白いページになって!しまったのは非常に残念だが（『キャンディ』原作者によると、本書に記載のある「係争中」-当時-ということ以外にも、掲載を許可できなかった理由はあったようだが…）、やはりそれでも、ある種の熱さと重さを持ったこの傑作を一気に読むために、それぞれコミックス４冊分をまとめて収録してあるこのワイド版は、よりベターなものだといえる。

それにしても、宮さんカッコいい！　男の中の男（ハートはオトメチックだけど）！！！
