作者自身が「戦記物をかくとわけのわからない怒りがこみあげてきて仕
方がない。多分戦死者の霊がそうさせるのではないかと思う」とあとが
きで書くとずば抜けた説得力がある。

そして解説者の方が戦記マンガ家としての「水木しげる」がもっと注目
されてよいと評価している。

確かにそう思う。

私は戦争を題材にした映画や本にあまり興味がありません。なぜなら飾られた言葉や美しい音楽、スプラッターの中に「戦争」を感じることができないからです。

しかし、この漫画は違います。派手な描写もスプラッターもありません。兵士達のなかに「お国のため」はどこにもなく、ただその日を懸命に生き、そして簡単に死んでいきます。

『下級兵士は「虫けら」「消耗品」』として扱われていた作者（主人公）が見た戦争のむなしさと悲しみを感じてください。

妖怪マンガで知られる水木しげるが、自らの戦争体験をもとにつづった渾身の一作。南太平洋の島、ニューブリテン島を死守するよう命ぜられた田所支隊に所属する初年兵、丸山が自身のモデルとなっている。

物語前半では、戦地での下級兵士の日常が淡々と描かれる。日常といっても、上官に殴られたり、同僚がワニに食われたり、魚をのどに詰まらせて死んだりと、尋常ではない事件が起こったりする。後半は、表題にある「玉砕」をめぐる悲劇へと突き進んでゆく。

登場するのは、とりわけ「お国のために」と使命感に燃えていたわけでも、狂信的になっていたわけでもない普通の青年たち。ひ弱だったり、ずるがしこかったり、いい加減だったりする彼らには親しみさえ覚える。そんな普通の人たちが、楠正成のように死にたいという上官の「美意識」の巻き添えを食らって、玉砕しなければならなくなってゆく。反戦ドラマにありがちな戦争批判の台詞はないが、物語そのものから強く伝わるものがある。
