3.0 out of 5 stars 米国文化の理解が英語の上達に役立つことを示唆する書籍, 2004/1/4
他の方の書評にもあったように、この続編は、米国文化と日本文化の違いや、米国文化のバックグラウンドに関するエッセイ的な話が多く、読み物としてそれはそれで楽しいのだが、natural な英語に近づくための具体的な Tips がやや少なく、「あれ？ それで何の話だっけ？」という状態になりやすい。

そういう意味で、前編を知っている人にはちょっと物足りないかもしれない。あるいはそういう文化のバックグラウンドを知らないと、最早英語はそれ以上上達しないよ、ということなのかもしれないが。

「日本人の英語」の続編だが、別に前作を読んでおく必要はない。読んでおくと理解は深まると思うけれど。取り上げている文法の項目は前作とほぼ一緒〔冠詞（名詞の用法）、前置詞、副詞、時制、知覚動詞、使役動詞〕だが、やや構成を変えて著者の好きな映画（かなり古い？）の台詞や小説を引用して解り易く解説している。前作同様（以上に）、読み物風に書かれているので気軽に読める。高校生ないしは中学生から社会人までお薦めの書。

言うまでもないことですが、マーク・ピーターセン氏の本の最大の特徴は、本人が日本語で書いている点だと思います。同じ外国語を学ぶ者として、著者から読者への共感が随所に感じられます。

本書では、a、theの使い分け、可算名詞の単複の意味の変化、hear/listenなど似た意味の知覚動詞の区別などが解説されています。

とり上げられているトピックはあまり多くはありませんが、「日本人の英語（正）」と同様、英米文学・詩、川端康成などの日本文学・俳句、洋画・邦画のセリフが例文として引用され、その味わい、美点を保ったまま相互に訳す試みをとおして、文法的決まりだけでなく、語感・文感までひとつひとつ丁寧に解説されています。

さらに、アングロサクソン系英語・ラテン系英語のニュアンスの違い、「Toto, I have a feeling that we're not in Kansas anymore.」「He calls me Miss Spiritual Tramp of 1948.」など単なる日本語訳では日本人には分からない、英語の背景にある文化の解説が非常に興味深いです。

写真も加わり、前著に比べエッセイ的な親しみやすさ、読み易さが増した反面、英語学習書としての実用的な面は薄れたかもしれません。しかし、やはり良書だと思います。
