殺人予告を巡る謎から、その予告をした犯人の存在そのものを巡る謎へ。月並みな言い方ですが、謎が謎を呼ぶ展開にページをどんどんめくって一気に読んでしまいました。
古い作品ですし、刊行当時に描かれた未来社会（たぶん21世紀前半）の描写は、今読むとおかしく思うところもいくつか出てきてしまいましたが、ネットワーク化された社会を巡る脅威は、現在読んだほうがよりリアリティをもった恐怖として理解できるのではないでしょうか。

筋やら背景やらはそれはそれでおもしろいのだが、脇に置く。とにかく、縁未来の地球人の議論というのは、超高速で自分の意見をただただ話すのだというシーンがある。それでも、話している内に若干側にいる、あるいは交流がゆるやかにある他の人間の同じく高速で話している内容を自分に取り込み、修正し、しゃべり続ける。そして、一定の範囲内に実行レベルのプランがまとまるまでそれを続けるのだという。なんと無駄が多い議論の仕方だろうと思っていたが、実は現在のブログの状態というのは、小松左京の描いた遠未来の議論の仕方が一部実現しているということではないだろうか？

“人類の後継者とはどんな存在か？”というテーマや謎の予告殺人と、
その犯人を推理する探偵小説的展開など、
中盤までは楽しみに読み進められるが、
解決編ともいえるラストはちょっとそれを受けられるほどの説得力と魅力はなかった。

真相／設定は確かにＳＦとしては面白いが、そんなのはチャーリーが予告通り殺された時点でだいたい分かる話だし、
ネタ的にも短篇のネタだと思う。

考えれば、終盤に向けて秘境冒険ＳＦっぽい展開になったあたりで怪しい感じはしていたのだ…。
アマゾンの描写は自然のダイナミックさの迫力が感じられて良かったが…。

というラストも、心を揺さぶる展開、というよりも、
まともに書くとやっかいだから「うまく逃げたな」という感じがした。
