この本を読んで、私は多くのことを考えさせられた。この本では、ジョン･ハリソンという不屈の時計技術者とネビル・マスケリンという第五代グリニッジ天文台台長の、ユニバーサルな時間の計測をめぐっての、激しい先陣争いがテーマとなっている。著者は、ハリソンに同情的な立場をとっているが、マスケリンの多大な貢献についても十分に記すことを忘れていない。この本が、米欧でベストセラーになった背景はいくつかあると思われるが、それは、彼らの父祖が大航海時代を経て新大陸へ大挙して進出した、その大元を支えた先駆的技術の開発の物語であり、しかもそうした技術が最初は不可能と思われていたのにあえて挑戦したからだからだと思われる。つまり、キャプテン･クックに代表されるわくわくするような海外雄飛の大冒険を縁の下でがっしり支えたのが科学者や技術者の生涯をかけての仕事だったのだから、これほど感動的なことはない。ハリソンは技術を代表し、マスケリンは科学を代表するようだ。共に競争して、傍からみると相補う関係にあった。ハリソンは徹底して頑固であり自分の技術の秘密を明かすのを嫌い、一方、マスケリンもあらゆる妨害をいとわない利己主義者のようにも見えるが、当時の状況を考えればやむをえない。何しろ、当時のイギリスでは、世界で最初の特許法もできたばかりで、すべてが試行錯誤の段階だったからだ。彼の頑固のおかげで、後に続く改良も短時間ですんだ。とにかくこの本を科学と技術に関心のある人全てに薦めたい。

　科学史としてはけっこう良くできている。クロノメータが大航海時代の時代背景で求められ、人間の世界観の変化、科学と技術の１関係として記述されている。

　しかし、図版や写真も無いので技術史としては掘り下げが浅い。クロノメータは機械であり、機構の記述が必須なのだが、ほとんど機構や構造には触れていないのが残念。著者は人間の話しとしてこの本を書いたとある。その意味ではなかなか良くできている。だが、技術の記述を抜きに技術者を記述してどんな意味があるのかといった読後感を持った。

ジョン・ハリソンによるクロノメータ開発に関する物語です．
時計の好きな方にはお勧めです．
本文中に図版がないので味わい半減ですが，図版の入った洋書（The Illustrated "Longitude"，同著者）もあります．こちらのほうが楽しめますが，ハリソンの時計（H1~H4）の機構・構造が詳しく解説されているというわけではないので，過度な期待は禁物です．

今まで、場所を知るのに経度と緯度があるのは知っていましたが、
緯度を知るのに比べて、経度を知るのはこんなに難しいんですね。
