心理療法をする前に、人間とは何か、生きるとは何か、死ぬとは何か、自分とは何か、をとことん考えるべし。その方法は、生活の中に、人間関係の中に、歴史の中に、本の中に、どこにでもある。それに気付けるかどうかは、本人の力量にかかっている。東洋、西洋、古代から現代、未来まで見渡し、哲学、文学、芸術、宗教、科学、あらゆる人間の営みを吸収して、自分の人間としての魂をとおして、人間の詩を感じることができる。
病める人も、健常の人もみんな同じで、みんな尊いということがわからなければ、臨床心理をやる資格はありません。

時に、治療者は不憫で哀しい。心理療法家は自身が受けたトレーニングの副作用に気づかず、空恐ろしい治療をすることがある。心理療法は心理療法家自身を歪め病しめ、癒しがたい歪曲と損傷をその人格に与える。理論という靴を履いて、技法を道具のように用いるならば、それは図らずして患者の心を踏みつけ傷めることになるからである。
雪の上を素足でよろめきながら歩いた事のない者、凍える冷たさを味わった事のない者は大地の春のぬくもりを知らずして過ごす。心理療法は教えることも教わることも出来ない独覚性を本来的に持つ。しかし忍辱と畏敬の念こそは治療者をも育む。それは一つの祈りである。患者の前に五体投地の礼をつくす心情が治療技法の背後に無ければ、如何なる優れた技法もその本来の力を正しく発揮し得ない。
素振りすら見せぬさり気ない好意、冷淡めいた密かな親切、邪険にも似た隠れた慈しみを著者は湛えていた。患者の心の奥底にある表現できない苦しさの核に向けて、一滴でも水を滴らそうと努めていた。その言葉を再発見しようとする姿は苦行僧にも似ていた。本書を遺して後、2009年10月7日、水の如く淡々としながらも、かくも深き魂は故郷である天国へと還って逝った。享年卒寿。君聞かずや、啾啾たる鬼哭の声
