最後に紙芝居をみたのは、いつだったかなあ。
確か保育園の頃だったような気がするが、はっきりと覚えていない。
かつては街頭で子供たちの人気を集めていたといっても
なかなか実感がわかない人も多いと思います。

本書の紙芝居屋さんも今では、すっかりおじいさんになって昔を
懐かしみます。ある日ふと思い立って、ひと仕事しようと数十年ぶりに
街へ出かけますが、そこにはかつての公園が姿を消しビルや車だらけの世界。
それでもおじいさんは拍子木を叩いて呼び込みをします。すると…

幼少時代を日本で過ごしたアラン・セイが、失われていく日本の文化に想いを
寄せて絵本化した、心温まるファンタジー。
途中で絵柄が紙芝居調にかわるところが見ものです。

『おじいさんの旅』で、アレン・セイに出会って以来、その静かな絵のたたずまいに
惹かれて飽くことをしりません。邦訳されたものを、折にふれて読んでいます。
落ちついた透明感のある色づかい。どこか日本画めいた風情をかもしだす線と色に魅了されています。
おじいさんが、もう一度と願った紙芝居屋さん。
どこにも一言も“戦争”という文字はないけれど、その前後の時代の空気を感じとらずには
いられません。
紙芝居を演じながらおじいさんが来し方を回想するシーンは、ふたつの祖国を持つ
セイの胸ふかくしまわれている日本への郷愁がひしひしと伝わってきます。
誰も過ぎ去った子ども時代を取り戻すことはできません。
しかし、おじいさんの話に応えたひとは、はからずも自分の子ども時代に
対面したことがわかります。
“あの時”を、大切に胸に秘めていたふたり。
その絵からは、二人の万感の思いがあふれるようで、胸があつくなるのを
おさえられませんでした。
