本書は、著者のバックパッカー、海外滞在、添乗員経験から、ざっくばらんに世界各国の人びとの仕草についてまとめ上げたものです。
ある程度主観的にはなっているようですが、なるほどと共感できる点があり、意外な各国の素顔も垣間見ることができます。
それらの観察の目線は常に庶民的であり、エピソードを中心として小ネタをまじえて構成してあります。
ちょっとしたネタ本として、適当な箸休めで読むにはいいと思います。
著者の大五さんの本は、以前よりかなり多く読んでいますが、添乗員記の意外体験シリーズを初めとして、バンコク滞在記など、いずれも人とのつながりや人の仕草や様子をおもしろおかしく描写するのが長けており、本書でもその様子が伺えます。
しかしながら、本書は読みやすい反面、読み応えという点に関しては、新書版ということもあり、上辺だけを流すだけになっているため、やや見劣りし、今一歩踏み込んだ押しの強さがみられません。
それと過去の経験上からのエピソードもネタ切れのように伺われ、作家という殻を抜け出し、まめに足を運び、からだを張った新しいネタ探しの旅に出て、ぜひともフレッシュな話題をどんどん提供してほしいと思います。

世界のあちこちで出会った、さまざまな国々の人々の癖。
世界中を添乗員として、また自分自身の旅行や滞在で廻った著者が
自分自身の体験を通して、紹介した本です。

まるでエスニック・ジョークに登場するような典型的なエピソードから
日本ではあまり知られていない国の面白いエピソードまで
たくさん詰まった本です。
文章も軽妙なエッセイ調が基本で、読みやすいです。
じっくり読み込むというよりは、ネタとして楽しみたい感じですが
さまざまなランキングをとり混ぜるなど、客観性のある視点も少しあります。
