この翻訳は古いため、少々現代語として違和感がある部分もあります。しかし、何種か読んで、私はこれが最も雰囲気があると感じました。

閉ざされた古い館の庭の、冬から春ヘの変貌。

数百年変わらない館と、日々青々とみずみずしく成長する庭の描写が素晴らしい。温かい雨が降り太陽がさし、芽がのぞき、葉が伸び、むせかえらんばかりに花が咲いていく描写、ぞくっとします。
庭仕事大好きさんにもお勧めです。

イギリス上流階級のお屋敷が舞台の本書のユニークさは、ヒロインが「つむじまがり」でかわいくない偏屈な女の子である点である。ついでに家政婦も庭番ものじいさんもなんだかイマイチな性格の人たちなのだ。まともなのは農村出身の姉弟とその母親くらいか。このあからさまな対比はルソーの『エミール』を彷彿とさせる。また、『ジェインエア』や『嵐ヶ丘』などブロンテ姉妹の作品のことも考えると、イギリスの19世紀は本気で病んでいたのだろうと思う。
この19世紀上流社会の桎梏の中で歪み育ったイギリスつむじまがりでかわいくない少女とわがままでひ弱な少年と、ありえないほど理想的な「自然な」農村少年の織りなす物語の最大の魅力は、実は自然描写の美しさではないかと思う。家政婦がいかにも魅力無さげに語るヒースの野原にすら、ヒロインはやがて魅力を見いだすのだが、その感情はそのまま読者に伝わってくるだろう。このほか彼らの自然とのふれあいを見ていると、私などは自分も同じように広々とした自然の中に生き生きした花園を作り上げたいと思い始めたものだ。ひ弱少年の身の上におこる変化は常識的にはあり得ないだろうが、それがすんなり読めてしまうのはひとえに自然の変化とその描写の力によるのではないだろうか。
この話にリアリズムがあるかと言われると、まあそれはないだろうな、甘い話だ、と思う。昨今の日本には歪んだ少年少女の物語がフィクションでもノンフィクションでも、またマスコミ報道などでも巷にあふれている。しかし子ども時代にはこのくらい夢のある話を読んでおきたいものだ。

私たちは、どのように時の流れを感じているのであろうか？また、私たちはどのようにして成長してゆくのであろうか？バーネット『秘密の花園』の主人公の１人、コリンの描写は、その答えを教えてくれる。

　この作品の中で、コリンの出てくる場面は大きく分けて２つある。それは、「屋敷の中」と「秘密の花園」である。最初、彼は「屋敷の中」で寝たきりの状態であった。ここで、彼は、わがままで自己中心的な、自分の思い通りに行かないと泣き出してしまうような幼児性を持つ少年として描かれている。しかし、「秘密の花園」作りに参加するにしたがって、彼は自分で歩けるようになり、強く、他人を思いやることのできる少年へと成長してゆく。それでは、この２つの場面の違いとは何であろうか？
　それは、「時の流れを感じることができるか、できないか」である。「屋敷の中」には時の流れを感じさせるものは何もない。実際、コリンは初めてメアリーに会い、春の話を聞いていたときに”Is the spring coming? What is it like? You don’t see it in rooms if you are ill”(133 l.15)といっている。しかし、屋敷の外にある「秘密の花園」には、１年周期で姿を変える植物、毎年、決まった時期に巣作りを始める駒鳥、つぐみなど、様々な季節を感じさせるものがある。コリンは、この日々変化しつづける花園を観察することで、初めて、時の流れを感じることができた。言い換えると、コリンの心の中で止められていた時が、初めて動き出したのだ。

　時の流れを感じる-私たちには当たり前すぎることかもしれない。しかし、コリンのいた環境ではそれがなかった。つまり、過去→現在→未来と時が進むのではなく、現在がループして、おそらく、１日１日が同じものに感じられたことであろう。成長とは、過去の自分を振り返り、未来に向けてフィードバックしてゆくこととも言えるのだから、コリンが屋敷の中」で成長してゆけるわけがない。
　コリンは「秘密の花園」で”I’ve seen spring now and I’m going to see the summer. I’m going to see everything grow here. I’m going to grow here myself”(231 l.6) と言った。これは、彼がこのときの流れを感じられる環境で、”grow”の意味が初めてわかり、花園の中のものと一緒に成長してゆきたいという決意が込められている。
