秘境添乗員、ジャーナリスト、英語・アラビア語通訳。1962年栃木県生まれ。元不登校児。高校時代、アメリカ留学のホームステイ先で、初めてカルチャーショックを体験し「異文化間交流」の大切さを実感。エジプトのカイロ・アメリカン大学留学と現地での「日常生活」を通して、7年間、文化人類学を学ぶ。在学中より、観光ガイド、ジャーナリスト、プチ通訳として活動を開始、「秘境添乗員」となる基礎をつちかう。仕事等で訪れた世界の国・地域は100近く(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

書名のとおり、普通の観光地などは歯牙にもかけずにひたすら辺鄙な土地を「秘境添乗員」と
して巡る著者の活動記。かなりきわどい行程でもあるので、実際に旅に参加するとなると、尋
常でない辛苦を味わうことになりそうです。

とはいえ、本書の約半分以上は著者が「秘境添乗員」になるまでの記録に割かれており、それ
はそれで面白いのですが、一冊丸ごと秘境めぐりに期待していたので、少し肩透かしを食った
ような感もあります。

また、「秘境」といっても人跡不確かな僻地を巡るというよりも、アルジェリア遺跡巡り、
ピースボート関連のインド闇社会の話など、どちらかといえば政治的な空白を生じた土地への
潜入を試みるかのような行動が多いので、冒険と言えば冒険ですが、「秘境」という言葉に魅
せられて購入すると、少し「アレ？」と思うかもしれません。著者曰く、「秘境添乗員」には
２種類あって、ジャングルをかき分けるようなエコツアー派と、著者のように古代遺跡巡りを
行う添乗員とに分けられるとのことですから、私が勝手に前者をイメージしてしまったという
ことですね。

個人的には「やった。」（坂本達　著　幻冬舎文庫）等の作品の方が、「秘境」巡りという点
においては、しっくりと来ました。

「秘境」という言葉から、どんな場面を想像するだろうか？　ジャングル？　アマゾンの奥地？？　ここに出てくる「秘境」は密林ではない。人は住んでいるが、ホテルが存在しなかったり、ツアー参加達があまりの不便さゆえにストレスを溜めるようなそんな場所である。しかし、タイトルである「秘境添乗員」の項は、それほど多くはない。
アメリカ留学体験記、自衛隊の通訳としてサマワ（イラク）に同行した話など。
中でもおススメなのが、7年間に及ぶエジプト留学体験記だ。この部分のみの著書なら、評価は５つ星なんだけど・・・。

非常につまらない本だった。

タイトルだけで買ってしまったのだが、タイトルから想像される内容とは異なり、本書は旅モノではなく単なるエッセイだった。

それも自伝エッセイで、知りたくもない著者の青春時代の話やら家族の話が満載である。

旅に関する苦労話や仰天話、爆笑エピソードや冷や汗エピソードはわずかしか無く、旅のおもしろ話を期待していると、肩すかしどころか、無防備な状態でグーパンチされるくらいつまらない。


更にいえば、本書の後半は自伝的な話が多くなり、嫁と出会った話とか、一番最後のエピソードは著者の母親の介護の話である。秘境旅行の裏話を期待していたのに、何で介護の苦労話を読まされなきゃならんのだ。

タイトルに偽りあり。
