エイズなんて自分とは全く関係のない病気だと思っていた。が、しかし、この本を読んでいくに従って、他人事ではないということがひしひしと伝わってくる。いくら接触感染はないと言っても、病院で働く人までもがエイズ患者を雑菌のように扱っているのには悲しくなってしまう。が、しかし、自分が果たしてエイズ患者を健康な人として扱えるだろうかという不安もまたうそではない。 エイズとは決して自分には関係のない病気ではない。 著者である家田荘子さん自身がエイズ患者と過ごした日々の実録であり、ぜひ読んでいただきたい1冊。

家田さん渾身の作品です。発表当時は治療薬も無くＨＩＶ感染イコール死を意味していました。そんな時にアメリカに渡りカウンセリングを習い感染者との交流を通じて家田さんは生きることの意味を書かずには居られなかったのだと思います。
治療薬が出来た現在（薬は飲み続けなければならないのですが）先進国では「死の病気」から「共生する病気」になりましたが、アフリカ等では今も「死の病気」なのです。そして多くの人が、子供たちが薬を得ることも出来ずに死んでいます。
