本書は、史上初めて出版差止を食らった小説として、
長く語り継がれること間違いなしの作品です。

私は文芸評論のセンスも能力も持ち合わせていないので、
ごく個人的な印象を書かせていただきます。
まず、本書は著者の処女長編だけあって、
以後の作品を彩る要素が、荒削りな形で満載されています。
すなわち、孤独、苛立ちや憎しみに苛まれる女性＝「私」、
周囲の人間への、良く言えばクール、悪く言えば酷薄な視線、
「在日」のアイデンティティ、複雑な家族関係などなどです。

その、著者らしさがストレートに出過ぎてしまったのが、
顔に「魚」を宿す女性を巡る描写であったと言えます。
正直言って、「魚」の描写抜きでも相当キツイ人物描写がなされており、
実在するモデルがこれを読んだ時のショックの大きさがわかる気がします。
ちなみに、肝心の「魚」の描写や、
本書が問題となった経緯は、
判例時報や判例タイムズと言った専門雑誌で読むことができますが、
私は原告となったモデル女性に同情しました。

巻末の福田和也氏の解説や一部の小説家の言動は、
司法の横暴や表現の自由、文学の崇高さを訴えていますが、
一私人の名誉やプライバシーに対する配慮を全く欠いており、
文学に携わる方々の傲慢さを感じずにはいられません。

また同氏がえらく絶賛しているので、読んでみたが私には主人公の思いに共感できなかった。というか、これは私が未熟者のためか、文章がまどろっこしくて読みにくかった。この作品が裁判によって出版停止という事態に追い込まれたことは注目に値するが、作品自体は良質とは思えない。あえていうならば、作品を通して全体に薄暗い雲がかかっており、そこに一筋の光さえさすことはなかった。作者はそれを望まないし、意図しなかったと思うが…。

改訂版では顔面の腫瘍のことはまったく書かれていないために事情を知らない読者は？とすっきりしないままに終わると思う。
