日本が誇る世界ブランドの一つ、田宮模型の創始者、田宮俊作による自叙伝。一時は話題になったハードカバー版が文庫本として再版されたものです。文庫本化に当たり、ハードカバー版では書ききれなかった話題と、田宮英国総代理店社長の回想が追加収録されている。特に後者の追加は、自叙伝と言う主観的な内容に客観性を与えるものとなっています。

内容は木製模型から始まる田宮模型の歴史を辿りながら、どのように企画、設計に取り組み、物作りと続けてきたのかというものです。しかしながら、会社の歴史が中心ではなく、話の中心はあくまでその取り組み。模型のオリジナルとなる実物の取材にまつわるエピソードを通じて、物作りに携わる田宮模型の姿勢と精神に触れることができます。

そもそもの内容は何かを具体的に示唆するものではなく、あくまで著者自身の体験を綴った自叙伝ではありますが、その内容から読み取れる事柄が、いろんな事象や読者自身の経験に通じる部分を感じ取ることで、ビジネス書的に読むこともできる稀有で面白い本に仕上がっています。

模型作りを始めて２０数年、ほとんどが田宮の製品でした。
それは、説明書の丁寧さ、パーツの精度の良さが他社の製品より一歩も二歩も
上を行くものだったからに他なりません。
その良さが子供だった自分にも理解させ得るものであることが田宮のすごさ
であると思います。

その裏には、社長をはじめ、社員、海外の関係者の力があってはじめてなし得たものだということが本書には書かれています。
ほんとに模型が好きでたまらない、そんな想いが伝わってくるような気がしました。
また、子供にも読みやすいように配慮したのでしょう、文字の大きさが通常の文庫よりも大きめで読みやすくなっています。

こういう細かいところにも気を配る心が世界の田宮を作ることが出来たようにも感じます。

子供の頃、「アオシマ」製の怪獣プラモを作り、「長谷川」製の潜水艦を浴槽で沈めて遊びました。実物との比較をするつもりのない幼少の頃は、手でパーツを引きちぎって作成し、それで満足でした。 リアルさを求めてプラモに塗装を施すようになったら、手にした模型はタミヤばかりになっていました。

タミヤ模型の成り立ち・生産する模型へのこだわりが書かれたこの本は、戦後日本の成長とオーバーラップします。工場火災から立ち直り、旧態の職人気質に悩まされ、国内最大手のメーカーとなっても海外では評価されず、そんなジレンマをアイデアと行動力で打破したタミヤの仕事振りは、貧困からの立身出世伝としても十分楽しめます。

最初に手が伸びるのは「模型ファン」だけでしょうが、私の中では「松下幸之助自伝」と並び得る人物評伝であると感じ、皆さんにもお奨めしたいのです。 何事においても、一つの事に熱中できた人生って素晴らしいですよね！
