田中 清玄
1906‐93年。北海道生まれ。1927年、東大在学中に共産党に入党。30年の再建大会で書記長となり、武装共産党を指導する。34年に転向し、戦後は“大物フィクサー”として、日本国内はもとより中東やインドネシア、中国など国内外で活躍した

大須賀 瑞夫
1943年福島県生まれ。67年、早稲田大学政経学部を卒業し、毎日新聞社に入社する。東京本社政治部、サンデー毎日編集部、政治部副部長などを経て96年に退社。現在はフリーのジャーナリストとして活動(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

飛びぬけて面白い人物の自伝。戦前、弘前高校、東大美学へ進んだインテリであることは、読めば行間から分かることとして、戦前は武装共産党の委員長。過激と言えばこんな過激な人はいない。国家を相手に戦争をしていたのだ。だが一転転向。戦後は天皇制護持、反米、反共、という当時としては独自でユニークなスタンスでフィクサーとして暗躍。山口組田岡とは兄弟分の繋がりで闇の世界にも確固たる地位がある一方、田中角栄、中山素平、中曽根康弘等々、政財界へのルートもしっかり握っている。だが世渡り上手とはほど遠い、一代の英傑で、スタンスの根本は徹底的な個人主義、自由主義者と見た。岸信介、児玉誉士夫らの満州帝国をイメージしたような復古主義的右翼とは鋭く対立、六〇年安保の影の仕掛け人として岸政権を打倒。しかし、児玉の差し金で東京會舘で狙撃を受け重傷となるが起死回生の復帰。暴力団抗争への発展を食い止める。石油メジャーに誘導される英米追随路線は否定し、インドネシアらの産油国と上手に付き合い、一方、欧州連合(今日のＥＵ）成立へ協力し、世界のバランスオブパワーを念頭に置いた反米、反ソ路線を進めたことは特筆されると思う。中国などアジア諸国への配慮も先見の明で、決してなめた態度を取らず慎重に未来へと向けた付き合いをリードしていくところは今日のお手本。それと、南ア問題の原因は、あそこが原発に必要なウラニウムの産地にあることを語っている件は、読んでいて、はっとした。とにかく現代の活劇を見るような面白さに溢れた自伝だ。

東大在学中に共産党に入党。それを知った母が切腹。治安維持法違反で検挙されて無期懲役。ひで夫人と獄中結婚。獄中でマルクス主義を捨てて右翼に転向。二度の恩赦で１０年で出獄。禅の修行。敗戦。昭和天皇に拝謁。日本の復興に奔走。タイ、インドネシア、中国を取り込んでアジア連盟創設画策。山口組三代目、タイのピブン、インドネシアのスハルト、中国のｹ小平、ＥＵの基となった凡ヨーロッパ運動のオットー大公、アラブ世界のいろんな指導者、自由主義経済学者ハイエクなどとの強いコネクション。全学連への資金提供。クエートやアブダビにおける石油掘削権獲得。アメリカ嫌い。軍国主義嫌い。ナショナリストであるとともに国際協調主義者。なんたる波瀾万丈の人生。このようなスケールの大きな人物が日本に再び現れるであろうか。

本書は聞き書き。それにちょっと本が薄すぎる。それで星一つ減らした。少なくも３倍はあってもよい。それくらいエピソードには事欠かないだろうから。ほんとうは田中清玄自身が書くべきだった。しかし多忙で本なんか書いている時間がなかったに違いない。

国内外の政財界・学界、そして任侠の世界にも通じていた、スケールの大きな黒幕であることはよくわかった。ただ、残念なことは、その地位に昇り詰めるまでの過程がほとんど語られていないことである。公的な地位をもたない人物が黒幕として君臨するには、通常、莫大な財力、情報力、知性、コネなど、何らかの力を有しているものである。田中清玄の場合、情報力、コネがその力の源泉であろうが、これらがどのように構築されたのか、本書では明らかになっていない。語りえないことが多いのは理解できるが、「遺言」としてまとめられたのであれば、もう少し深部・暗部について語ってほしかった。
