有名な怪談の原典を現代語で紹介してくれるという、大変読みやすい本。誰でも知っている「耳なし抱一」や「番町皿屋敷」から「牡丹灯篭」など、果ては杉浦日向子氏の『百物語』に載っていた挿話の原典などまであった。どの話も興味深く､気軽に何処からでも読めるのでよい。

多くの怪談を「女の嫉妬」、「異界との接触」、「因果応報」などという内容によって章を分けており、各章の終りに短い論評が添えられている。ところどころに興味深いコメントがあった。例えば､僧たちが集い学ぶ「檀林」という場における怪談の発生と、現代の「学校の怪談」の発生に共通点をみたり、怪異の発生が空間的、時間的な「境界」という場で起こるという指摘などは、もっと突っ込んだ内容の論考を読みたいと思わせる。調べると著者はそれらを詳しく述べている本を書いているようなので､この本を良い導入として、日本の怪談の世界に踏み入っていくのも一興か。

それにしても感心するのは､「耳なし抱一」で有名なラフカディオ・ハーン（小泉八雲）だ。彼はその『怪談』のなかで、抱一の話だけでなく、本書で取り上げている幾つもの話を分り易く英語圏に紹介している。もし原典にあたったのであれば、相当な苦労であったのだろうと想像する。

読んでまず感じたことですが、とてもまじめな本です。
怪談についてよく分かります。
ただ、怪談に入り込んで、楽しみたい人には不向きではないでしょうか？
例えば、朗読してもらっても、あまり怖くは無いのではないでしょうか。
でも、いい本です。怪談を学べます。
