Shibori is much more than just "tie-dyeing." It involves taking fabric--a two-dimensional, flat medium -- and tying or clamping it to give it three-dimensionality prior to dyeing. After dyeing, the image of the three-dimensional shapes into which the cloth was twisted remain. Even if the cloth should return to being perfectly flat, it retains a sense of depth, and the "memory" of the dyeing processes.
Memory on Cloth introduces the work of forty of the best contemporary shibori artists, including fabric designers, textile artists and designers of wearable art.
The wearable art section features, among others, Yohji Yamamoto, Junko Koshino, Issey Miyake's main fashion designer, Makiko Minagawa, and Carter Smith. The section on textile art looks at the shibori sculptures of French artist Helene Soubeyran, who piles together shibori samples she has made over the years, coating them with varnish and then slicing them into cross-sections. Fabric design features the work of Joan Morris, whose shibori "interpretations" of remote sensing data of far-flung parts of the earth were funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This book will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone with an interest in fabric, dyeing or design.
The book contains 150 color photos, 50 black/white photos, approximately 30 line drawings, glossary, list of suppliers, and index.
