クリント・イーストウッドによる作品。大東亜戦争における硫黄島での激戦をベースに描かれている。不勉強ゆえどこまでが真実でどこからが脚色なのか分かりませんが、基本的に日米の善悪を問うている作品ではなく、戦争そのものの現場であった出来事や、擂鉢山に翻った星条旗にまつわるエピソードを表現している。戦争と言うものを否定することも肯定することもない、作品だと感じた。

しかし、戦争そのものが悲惨であることを指摘し、戦場で男たちは、その場の仲間の為に戦っていたということをメッセージとしている。

私はこの大東亜戦争はルーズベルトを筆頭としたアメリカの罠の一つだと信じているが、それとは別にアメリカの兵士も日本兵と同じ気持ちで戦っていたのだろうと、感じた。

本の原作では日本兵が無慈悲な拷問を米兵に行ったようだが、本編ではカットされたカタチになっている。BC級の戦争犯罪はあったかもしれませんが、米国の火炎放射器という無慈悲な兵器の利用など、もっと公正に作ることができるかもしれないなとも思います。

演出面では静かです。そして砲撃の音が大きく、そういう点ではメリハリがはっきりしていて、様々なシーンが印象的に表現されるようになっています。こういうのはroad to pardithionを彷彿とさせますが、スタッフは全然ちがうんですね。

　戦争映画と思ってみてしまった私がいけなかった。テーマはあくまでも国家に英雄に仕立て上げられてしまった兵士達のその後の話です。「誰も置いていかない」とアメリカ軍は言われるが輸送船からふざけて落ちた兵士がそのままにされてしまうさりげないシーンが最初にあります。星条旗を立てた彼らが戦後あんな運命をたどっていたなんて全く知りませんでした。国家が英雄として国債の宣伝に利用するだけ利用して戦後はほったらかしにしていたなんて。アメリカ人好みの英雄を裏側から取り上げたイーストウッドには敬意を評します。いくらイラク戦争で厭戦気分が漂っているアメリカでもこの映画の内容はきつかった。私にもきつかった。あまりに「硫黄島〜」に共感しすぎてしまったからか。でもこういった内容の映画を作ってしまうアメリカ映画界は日本のメディアミックス映画とはワンランク以上違う。
