　三十年も前のことだが、高校生の私はこのドラマに夢中だった。
　ブルース・リーが火付け役となったカンフーブームの流れを汲む連続テレビドラマではあるが、本作は７０年代半ば、精神世界を放浪するアメリカの若い世代のムーブメントとぴったり合致したこともあるのだろう、単なるアクションものの枠におさまり切らない精神性の色濃い作品に仕上がっている。
　デイビッド・キャラダイン演じる主人公のカンフーも見物だが、少年時代の彼が盲目の師から様々な教え受けるシーンも本作の魅力の一つだ。それは禅の逸話や時には聖書から材を取った教訓のようなものだが、なかなか含蓄のある教えの数々である。それらのシーンに再会したくて早速、予約しました。

ブルース・リーのような派手なアクションを期待するとガッカリ？すると思いますが、人間ドラマとしては素晴らしい内容です。人によっては若干説教くさく感じるかもしれませんが、仏教の教えが結構正しく反映されており、主人公ケインの性格や行動は仏教修行者にとっても大いに参考になると思います。少なくとも私が今まで見てきたドラマや映画の中では、最も哲学的・宗教的に素晴らしいドラマでした。ケインのように強く、優しくなりたいと見るたびに私も思います。（特典映像に出ていた話ですが、米国での放送当時、この番組の感想をレポートす宿題を出していた小学校もあったようです）

主人公役のデビッド・キャラダインはカンフーを知っていたわけではありませんが、
本物の中国拳法家が演技指導をしており役者さんがなまじ知らないだけに技の表現が素直で、
今時の、京劇から発展したあり得ない格闘表現より、よほどリアルです。
武術としての中国拳法に表演や体操以外に派手な蹴り技などあり得ないのです。
逆に視覚に頼らない対手の把握、腕力に頼らない背筋の使用、地を蹴らない体軸の移動などよく表現されています。
