詩情が煌めく珠玉のオムニバス短篇集,

「1999年1月 ロケットの夏」から「2026年10月 百万年ピクニック」まで、火星を主題にした26の短篇が収められたオムニバス作品集。ブラッドベリにはほかにも素敵な短篇がいくつもあるけれど、たった一冊だけと言われたら、わたしはこれを持ってきます。短篇の粒が揃っていますしね、きらきらと輝く詩情の美しさ、みずみずしさ、透明感がもうほんとに綺麗。ダークなムードの作品もありますが、それもひっくるめてその宝石のような幻想の煌めきにうっとりさせられてしまうのです。どの短篇も素晴らしいなかで、格別のテイストに酔っぱらっちまった作品を三つだけ選ぶとしたら、「夜の邂逅」「イラ」「第二のアッシャー邸」でしょうか。殊に「夜の邂逅」は珠玉の名品。サンリオＳＦ文庫のブラッドベリ短篇集『万華鏡』で初めて読んだのですが、胸がいっぱいになりましたねぇ。数あるコンタクトもののなかでも、まず最高級の作品でしょう。 小笠原豊樹氏の訳文も、「名訳とはこういうのを言うのだろう」てなくらい見事なもの。素晴らしい読みごたえを堪能させられた一冊。

「さみしさ」をいだいて,

ファンタジーというジャンルでドラゴンが愛されるように、ＳＦというジャンルでは火星が愛されている――そう聞けば、いかにもそうだと思うお人が多いでしょう。それほど、その種のイマージュは氾濫しているようです。ですから『火星年代記』という素っ気ないタイトルだけ見れば、「またお決まりの火星ものか」という感慨をいだくお人も少なくないと思うのです。けれどもちょっと待って欲しい。これは火星人が地球に来襲してくる猟奇的な物語ではないのです。 これは、火星移民の話。 形としては、たくさんの短篇をつないだ連作形式になると思います。個々の短篇はときに詩のようだったり、ときに風刺劇のようだったりして、実に変化に富んでいます。 文量的にいったら「二〇〇一年八月 移住者たち!!」のあたりはとても少ないのですが、読んだときに胸に広がるイマージュはただごとではありません。というのも、ロケットが発射される前にたいていの人が気分が悪くなるそうですが、その病気は「さみしさ」と呼ばれたのですって。 さみしさ――わたしたちはいつでも、広大な宇宙のただ中にひとりぼっちで立っていることを、そういう言葉が思い出させてくれると思うのです。そういうのって普段は忘れているようなことですが、本当は決して忘れてはいけなかったことなんじゃないかと思うのですよ。

故郷に帰ろう,

「われらはもはやさまようまい こんなにおそい夜の中心は今なお愛に満ち 月は今でも明るいが」（本文より） 火星年代記の火星人は侵略しない。 彼らはむしろ侵略され、人間の鏡であり、ある種の理想でもある。 火星へ行く、新しい土地へ行く話のはずなのに、なぜか感じるのは「故郷」「帰る場所」への人間の心だった。 帰る場所、それはいとしい人間の腕の中だったり、思い出の中の生まれ故郷だったりする。 たとえ別の場所にいっても、人は自分の居場所を捨てきれないのだな、としみじみ思う。 人間は、美しい火星を、地球らしく（この場合はアメリカらしく）する。 また、死んでしまったはずの人間を、わかっているはずなのにそれでも望んでしまう。 しかしそんな人間たちの愛すべき愚かしさを、冷笑するのではなく、火星人を通してせつなく描いているところは、まさにブラッドベリ。 「月は今でも明るいが」「夜の邂逅」「第2のアッシャー邸」が、小話として気に入った作品。 いいＳＦである。 宇宙へのロマンと、人間への愛情に満ちた目、美しい文章。 ヒューマニズムに過ぎるという批判があって当然だが、それでも価値があるように思う。 せつなさが、しんしんと浸みてくる良作。
