著者のジャン=ドミニック・ボービー氏は、1952年生まれ。
ジャーナリストとして数紙を渡り歩いた後、世界的なファッション雑誌、『ELLE』の編集長に
就任しました。名編集長として名を馳せますが、1995年12月8日、突然脳出血で倒れ、ロ
ックトイン・シンドロームと呼ばれる、身体的自由を全て奪われた状態に陥ってしまったのです。まだ働き盛りの43歳でした。
病床にありながらも、唯一自由に動かせる左目の瞬きだけで本書を「執筆」しました。
本書は大きな話題を呼び、フランスだけでなく、世界28か国で出版される世界的なベスト
セラーとなりました。しかし、1997年3月9日、突然死去。本書がフランスで出版された
わずか2日後のことだったのです。

71歳という年齢としては、極めて元気だった親父が、脳梗塞で突然倒れた。一緒に八ヶ岳に登った、わずか数ヶ月後のことでした。

「脳幹」の「橋（きょう）」の神経細胞が、脳梗塞により死んだ。生命の危機を脱した親父の状態が、この本の著者(?)と同じ。

Locked in syndrome。「閉じ込め症候群」だそうです。
知覚と思考は正常なのに、体は全く動きません。

医師の説明で、理屈では理解していた状況を、この本がリアルに理解させてくれました。

眼球と瞼しか動かせない人が、この本を書いたプロセスが、心の深い所にズシンと来ます。親父のために、同じ事をしてあげなければ、と思う。

　「もし人が、すべてを失い、〈心〉だけの存在になったとしたら、世界は、そして人生は、どのように見えるのだろうか」
とは本書の訳者のことばだ。その問いに偶然答えることになったのが本書だ。

　映画の中にもそれを象徴する場面がある。ジャンドクがまさに昏睡から目覚めた直後のワンシーンだ。おぼろげな意識からやがて覚めてくるジャンドクだが、医師の質問に答えている「はず」なのに、なぜか通じていない。なかなか自分の置かれている状況が飲み込めず、医師の説明によってしだいに明らかにされていく病状から、ジャンドクは落ち着きを失い次第に呼吸が荒くなる。「誰にも通じない」そんな患者の絶望感、孤立感が伝わってくるようだ。

　ジャンドクは確かにことばを失ってしまった。しかし、ジャンドクらしい感性や記憶、想像力までは失われなかった。そうした内なる想いを引き出すのに成功したのが瞬きコミュニケーションだ。以下は彼のことばだ。
「楽しみのためには、匂いや味についての、鮮烈な記憶をよみがえらせてみる。それは決して汲み尽くしてしまうことのない、人間の感覚の貯水池だ。残り物をうまく料理するコツがあるように、僕は今、思い出をじっくり煮込むコツに、磨きをかけている」
「生きている限り、呼吸をする必要があるのと同じように、僕は、感動し、愛し、感嘆したい」

　こうした代替的なコミュニケーションを可能にした言語療法士を、彼は＜守護天使＞と呼び、こう言っている。
「言語療法は、もっと広く知られるべきものだと思う。舌というものが、ことばの持つあらゆる音を出すために、いかにさまざまな運動を無意識のうちに行っているか、まったく驚かされるばかりだ」

　普段私たちは意識していないが、一言を発することさえ奇跡なのだということを、本書によって改めて思い知らされた。一瞬一瞬の奇跡に感謝しつつ、ことばをうまく使えない人を理解したい。

映画を見逃していたのだが、ある本を読んだら、本のほうも素晴らしいと薦めているので、読んでみた。
大変静かな読み口。
そして内容も非常に濃くて、これがまばたきだけしかできない男性が書いたものとはとても思えない。
そういった書き方への驚きを超えた、内容自体の味わい深さが、この本を残したことの意味を一層際立たせる。
読み終わったら、何故か頑張る気というか、負けないぜという気になった。
静かなのに、あおられる。不思議な本だった。
