夏目漱石の孫にあたる著者が、世に言われる鏡子夫人の「悪女」説への反論として書かれた作品ですが、それ以上にタイトルにもなっている「愛のかたち」がくっきりと描き出されています。

この本は三章からなり、漱石、妻鏡子、娘筆子がそれぞれ描かれてゆきます。前半は、漱石の人となりや家族の状況が中心に描かれており、著者の言いたいことは、「鏡子」の章から「筆子」の章の前半のかけてのあたりかなと思います。
鏡子の悪阻の酷さ、それは自殺さえ試みるほどのものでした。そして漱石の鬱病。互いに大きな病との闘いがあり、それを労わり合う夫婦がそこにはありました。
確かに「剛毅」と表現される鏡子の性格は、当時の社会では認められないものであったかも知れません。そして、二つの意地っ張りで頑なな二つの魂のぶつかり合いは、相当のものだったかも知れません。でも、二人の病の後では、屹度互いに愛しみあう素晴らしい「愛のかたち」になっていたのだろうと確信させてくれます。そこには、病を通じてではあっても、相手を尊敬し労わり合う気持ちがあったのだと思います。
堅物で通っていた漱石にも不器用ながらも「愛」があり、似たもの夫婦の鏡子夫人にも同様の「愛」があったのでしょう。

漱石の孫の著者が漱石夫妻について語ったもの。ただし、著者が生まれた時点では既に漱石は没しているので全て又聞きである。そこには真実はなく、祖母鏡子夫人伝来の吹き込みと著者の思い込みで成り立っている。

著者が漱石について語る内容は全て鏡子夫人によって吹き込まれたものだから、「漱石の思ひ出」を越える内容にはなり得ない。「漱石の思ひ出」の中で、鏡子夫人は漱石の事を「頭の調子の悪い男」と書いており、また、漱石が東大と明治の講師を掛け持ちで担当して収入維持に努めているのに「稼ぎが悪い」と非難する。漱石がイギリス留学の結果、精神を病んだのは確かだが、こうした非難を妻から受けて癇癪を破裂させない男がいるだろうか。そして、漱石の高い理念は一部の門人を除くと周囲に理解されないのである。この辺の状況は「道草」に詳しい。これで、聖人君子のように家の中で振舞えと言うのは土台無理である。

著者は女性らしく、平和な家庭を望んでいるだろうし、祖母や母から聞いた話を信じているだろう。その上で家庭人としての漱石に対して判断を加えているようだ。だが、その考察は上述の通り不毛である。漱石夫妻の形は上述の「道草」や「野分」に詳しく書かれているのだから、それらの作品を参考にするべきであろう。身内が書いた作品だからと言って信用に足る内容とは限らないのである。

漱石の孫にあたり、かつ５５年のアメリカ生活をしている著者から浮き彫りにされる、漱石と妻鏡子の関係が興味深い１冊だった。
悪妻の噂は漱石の弟子たちが、恩をあだで返す行為だっただけでなく、何故そういう行為をしたのか松岡さんの文章から伺える。
周囲の人から聞いてきた漱石のエピソードと、孫という立場から残る自分の記憶と、当時の日本から分析される結論が納得出来るからだと思う。
どの家にも歴史ありと思わせる、漱石家を鼻に掛けない人間味溢れる１冊だった。
