この物語に描かれるのは全面核戦争が終わった直後の世界です。
北半球が主戦場になったため最後にオーストラリアのみが生き残った形になっていますが、放射性降下物（死の灰）が徐々に押し寄せて来るため、この地が滅ぶのも時間の問題となっています。

大抵のSFものでは、この状況を打破すべく生き残った人たちが知恵を振り絞るとか、武器を手に残り少ない食料や資源を奪い合うような展開になるかと思いますが、これはそういう小説ではありません。今やれることを今まで通りやり、それが何の保証も無い将来に続く唯一の道であると、自分に思い込ませて生きる人たちの話です。

なぜそんな夢も希望も無いような話が傑作と呼ばれるのか？
それはきっと彼らの生き方が、人間の普遍的な生き方そのものだからじゃないでしょうか。核戦争という大掛かりな舞台装置を持ちながら、「確証のない明日」に対する人間の不安や恐怖、希望を描き切った事こそが、この作品を傑作たらしめている理由であると思います。

これは人類に訴えかけている、聖書だ。
新たなる聖書。
暗澹たる雲行きの今現代だからこそ、読まれてしかるべき傑作である。
これは小説愛好家でなくとも、読まれるべき作品であります。
