ネタばれになるので言えないのですが、主人公が陥った悪夢の正体は、
あっと驚くもの。そのアイデアだけでも読む価値あり。
主人公が陥る、密告の罠や警察との駆け引きなど、神経症的な
監視社会の描写は異常にリアルで、スリル満点。
執筆には、ディック自身がＦＢＩに日常生活を監視されていた経験が
生かされているらしいそうですが、
その過剰なリアルと、悪夢を生んだ奇抜なアイデアが
うまく融合して、一気に最後まで読ませます。
全編、これぞディックというまさに悪夢の世界ですが、
終盤で出てくる、タイトル通りの涙あふるるシーンが
ある種のカタルシスになっていて、読後感は割とすっきり。
最後に人間性と非人間性の妙な共存というディック大好きなテーマが
現れて、うまくまとまっています。

本書のラストでの一場面は、なんでもない場面ながら妙に心に残る。人間の悲しみゆえの衝動がうまく描かれていると思う。そこに絵になる人物が配されているのでより印象に残った。
しかし、本書には見事に裏切られた。読む前は『存在しない男』となった主人公が日常を失くした悪夢世界からの突破口を捜し求めるサスペンスフルな話なのかと思っていたのだが、本書にそういったハラハラドキドキのスピード感は無縁のものであり、どちらかというと、思弁的な雰囲気さえ漂っているので驚いてしまったのである。描かれているのは相変わらずの不条理世界なのだが、人間の本質としての感情面が全面に押し出されているのだ。
余談だが本書を執筆していた時期、ディックは失意のどん底だったそうだが、いかにも彼の内面が溢れていて痛々しい感じだ。読了して、少し心が苦しくなってしまった。

ディックの中では割と異色な作品かも。どうしても割り切れない感じが
好きです。
あとこの作品で出色なのが女性の描き方。主人公が関わっていく女性達
が皆ひと癖あり、そのややこしさが主人公を取り巻く悪夢のような状況
とリンクしてます。
｢暗闇のスキャナー」と並ぶディックの裏ベストだと思います。
