韓流時代劇の流れは，実話物（医療物・立志伝物）とフュージョン時代劇（チェオクの剣，太王四神記など）といわれる創作物に分かれますが，どちらも場合もかなりの長編にも関わらず人気作品が多いというのが特徴でしょう。
この時代劇人気に便乗しようとしたのか，最近次々と魅力的な韓流時代劇（「大祚栄」「洪國榮」「暗行御史」「太祖王先建」「黄真伊」「シークレットルーム」）がリリースされています。
また，現在はリリース情報未定ですが，「イサン」「一枝梅」「快刀洪吉童」「張吉山」「王の女子」「女人天下」あたりも出てきそうですね。
さて本作ですが，これは実話物に属する全４０話の作品です。
主演は「殺人の追憶」のキム・サンギョンssi，１８世紀，朝鮮王朝時代に実在した権力者，洪國榮（ホン・グギョン）の波乱万丈の生涯を描いた作品です。
國榮は，両班出身で学問優秀な青年でしたが，貧乏を強いられ前途は険しく，ついに盗賊団の一味になる決意までしますが，この盗賊に関わったことで，クギョンの人生は，運命の歯車が大きく回り出すことになります。
後にクギョンは，大王が次期王位としてイサン（後の正祖大王，「ソドンヨ」で阿佐太子を演じたチョン・ジェゴンssi）を指名したことから，イサンを守るべく警護の職に召し抱えられ，身を粉にして，イサンに仕えます。
しかし，イサンの権力基盤は弱く，朝廷内は依然混乱していました。
イサンはクギョンに朝廷内の実権を握る為に重臣達を説得し，自分達の陣営を支持するように説得せよと命じます。当初，対抗勢力についていた有力者たちも，やがてクギョンの熱意に動かされイサン側についていくようになりますが，後のライバルとなるチョン・フギョム（「クッキ」のチョン・ウンインssi）も欲望剥き出しに権力者への階段を駆け上っていきます。
史実に基づいた作品ということで，ラブストーリーが強調されることはありませんが，それなりに“恋”もあり，三角関係もあり，時代劇ファンでなくても十分楽しめる作品だと思いますよ。
