気の弱い料理人李三。料理しかできないがその才能はかなりのもの。彼の生き甲斐は奥様(沈夫人)に料理をおいしいと喜んでもらうこと。

おいしいものに目がない沈夫人にとって、実は李三はお気に入りで料理のウデも認めている。が素直にほめることはしない。それは自分に自信の無い李三の反応が楽しくてしょうがないから(笑)。そんな奥様は無邪気な少女のようなかわいらしさも感じさせる。

李三が落ち込んだ時は料理のデキにより磨きがかかるとあって、はた目から見ると李三いじめが奥様の日課のようなもの。ただし高貴な出自で結構頭の切れる奥様が下品ないやがらせをするわけも無く、オドオドいじいじの李三が自ら陥るトラブルを対岸の火事と楽しむような(マッチポンプなところもあるが)、有閑マダムと呼ぶにふさわしい上品な(?)性格(笑)。

作者の深巳さんは女性の負の感情を題材に作品を描いてきたが、イタイ内容になることもしばしばだった。しかし本作は奥様とその下僕という関係でイタイ表現をオブラートにくるんで、万人受けする作品に仕上がった。奥様と料理人の奇妙な(?)信頼関係に感涙すること請け合い。中国の時代劇っぽい背景と相まって、マンガ好きのおじさんに受けること間違いない(自分のことでした、若い人にも受けると思いますが、笑)。

　沈家に買われてやってきた可哀想な料理人と沈家の奥様の話です。

　料理人の李三は、料理人としての腕は確かなのだが、気が弱い。沈婦人は若くておきれいでいらっしゃるが、食い意地がはっていて意地が悪い。で、李三は、プレッシャーをかければかけるほど実力を発揮するタイプで、その気性を見て取った沈婦人はおいしい物を食べたい一心で、同時に、おどおどとした李三の狼狽をぶりを楽しみたいがために、ひたすら李三に無理難題を吹きかけていぢめる。
　沈婦人と李三は、雇い主と召使いの関係から一歩も出ないわけだけど、どこか隠微でいやらしい感じがする。

　毎回登場する料理も、当時の上流階級の食事なわけだから、たいていは一食作るのに何時間もかかる手間暇のかかる代物で、作り方なども!丁寧に解説されているのだが、まあ、現代の日本のご家庭ではつくることはまず不可能でしょう。レピシとしては役に立たないけど、「おそらく旨いのだろうなあ」という感じは、ひしひしとします。

とにかくおススメです。誰かが死んだりとか、やらしいのとかが描かれているわけではなく、それでいてコミカルで、何度も読んでしまいます。私は買ってすぐに三回読んで、まだ返し読みしています。うまくいえないですが、ホシつです。
