　読んで驚いた。迷路のような街なかを散歩するのが好きな私にとって，『江戸東京の路地』に紹介されている佃や本郷，谷中，銀座，麻布など20カ所以上の街は，本書を持って改めて訪れてみたいところと思った。つまり面白いガイドブックだったが，それだけではなかった。
　この書は，日本の都市とそこでの生活の「構造」を分析していた。「賑わう路地には，人が引けた後の空虚さがない。路地を訪れる人が，一人でも大勢でも，場の設え（しつらえ）そのものに賑わいの予感を感じる。私以外，だれもいなくても充分に場の雰囲気を味わえる」と最初の方に記している。これが『身体感覚で探る場の魅力』というサブタイトルを意味しているのだろう。そして最後に，そのような人の温もりのある場を作るには，「空間の設計」だけでなく，人々が生活し気持ちが空間に描かれていく「時間の設計」が不可欠と述べている。
　「ああ，そうなのか」と思った。私の近所の街あるいは商店街には，親しみのわくところもあるが，壊れかかっていると思われるところもある。その理由がわかった気がした。また，気づきにくく壊れやすいが，実は失ってはならないものがあるのは，街づくりに限った話ではない。そんなわかりにくい話を路地という身近な題材をもとに明確に説明してくれたのが本書だと思う。
