『孤島の鬼』の主人公「私」は美貌の青年。彼を愛する年上の青年の悲哀と、彼が愛した娘の殺人から物語は始まる。そして「私」が巻き込まれる悲劇とおぞましい体験は、短期間で彼の頭髪を真っ白にさせるほどのものだった。同性愛と異形なる者の陰翳に隈取られつつ、血塗られた殺しがそこに重なった、濃密で粘度の高い＜語り物＞である。
『孤島の鬼』と『猟奇の果』は昭和4年から1年に1作のペースで間断なく雑誌連載され、整形外科手術による「人間改造術」をその共通プロットに持つ。しかし完成度において『孤島の鬼』にはっきりと軍配が上がる。『猟奇の果』は途中でストーリーの破綻をきたし、後半で明智小五郎を登場させるが、姑息な急場凌ぎも上手くいかなった。才能豊かな乱歩にしてさえ起こった失敗だが、それをこそおもしろさとして受け止めることもできよう。
装幀のカバーに使われた勝本みつるのオブジェ・コラージェが妖しさを演出。見返しには初版本の写真もカラー掲載されている。（松平盟子）
