かつてこの作品が「ASUKA」誌上に掲載されていた頃数回読んだことがあったのですが、ずっと忘れていました。けれども心の底では忘れられず、今回出版されたと知って買わずにはいられませんでした。

時は戦国の世、記憶をなくした少女鏡子の故郷を探し求めてさすらう主人公のワタルと鏡子が魅力的で、ストイックかつエロティシズムの薫り漂う、美しく哀切な愛の物語です。といっても近藤さんの作品ですから大泣きするような話ではありません。読み終わったあと、淡々とひたひたと哀しみにひたされてくるような物語です。ところが作者の「あとがき」がまた素晴らしく、本編に続けて読んでいるうちにどんどん涙が出てきてしまいました。

素晴らしい作品です。

　戦国時代であろうか。

　狼にひろわれ、行者に育てられたワタルは「立派な人間になりたい」と思い旅をしていた。ある時、さらわれた娘、鏡子（かがみこ）を夜盗の手から救う。鏡子は生まれた時に持っていた鏡を失ったため過去の記憶がない。ワタルと鏡子、ふたりの旅は鏡子の家探しの旅。その途中、さまざまな事件に出会う。

　鏡子はワタルのことを「自分のことを救ってくれる人」と直感し、ワタルから離れない。ワタルは修行の旅に女は妨げ、と考えたが、純真な鏡子をじょじょに好きになる。
　第七話「白比丘尼」。途中、何度も生まれ変わり、何千年を生きる白比丘尼にふたりは出会う。白比丘尼は「この娘が知恵を持った時、おまえたちは別れ別れになるであろう」と予言する。

　結末部分が12年間書かれなかった未完の名作だが、今回著者が加筆しワタルと鏡子の最後が語られる。

　あとがきで著者はこの話を「得るものと失うものの物語」と書いている。各話の登場人物それぞれに得るものと失うものがある。ワタルもまた望みである立派な人間にはなれていないし、鏡子も鏡（過去の記憶）を失った状態。失ったものを得た時にふたりはどうなるのか？

　決して上手とはいえない素朴なタッチの絵が、人生を一気に縮図化し、自分自身をも振り返らせてくれる。私は億単位のお金を持ちになりたい。けれども、それが実現した後はどうなるか？そんなことは実現していない人にはわからない話なのだ。

狼と行者に育てられた少年、ワタル。
野盗にさらわれていた（ちょっと変わった）少女、鏡子（かがみこ）。
彼は、その彼女を家まで送っていくことになります。

いろいろな人（や人以外）に出会い、いろいろな事件に巻き込まれながら進む、彼らの旅。
そこで見る、人の表や裏。そして、さまざまな愛の形。

「立派な人間」とは何かをぼんやりと考えながら、いつもおなかをすかせて、彼らの旅は続きます。
いつかくる、別れへと向って。

無邪気に、ワタルへの好意を表現する鏡子。
そんな鏡子への対応に困る、生真面目なワタル。
手がふれただけでドキドキする。
ただ、ずっと一緒にいたい。
そんな水色なシチュエーションが好きな方に、お勧めしたいです。
