第二次世界大戦下のナチスドイツ。ナチの施設レーベンスボルンでマルガレーテは不老不死を研究するクラウスと結婚するが・・・。
　
戦時下のドイツの描写が素晴らしい。物語自体はミステリーというよりも純文学を読んでいる感じだった。だが、この小説のすごさはラスト１行にある。すべての物語が終わったかに思えたその後に、最大のどんでん返しが待っているので、読み忘れのなきよう。普段は「あとがき」は読まないあなた、この「あとがき」は「あとがき」にあって「あとがき」にあらず。もうこれ以上は書けません、先に解説やあとがきを読む人は間違って先にあとがきを読まぬようお願いします。

穏やかな陽光、集うのは金髪碧眼の姉弟と見まがう3人と1人の幼子。 マルガレーテは二十歳、フランツは十歳、エーリヒは七歳になっていただろうか。幼いミヒャエルはまだ何も知らない。ひとときの絵、オーバーザルツベルク。

ここは、第二次大戦時のドイツ、私生児を生むため若い妊婦が集まり、見目よい小児を選別しＳＳ将校に提供するナチの施設レーベンスボルン-生命の泉-。すべてはここから始まり、そして還る。

前線へ向かうまでのひととき、若い戦士達は女達と遊ぶ。「生めよ増やせよ」とドイツでも奨励されたわけです。彼らの遊びも遊びではなく、国策に沿った行動となるそうな。マルガレーテもそんな中妊娠するが、爆撃により住居と職を失う。行く当てもなく、噂に聞くレーベンスボルンで子供達の世話をしながら子を産み、我が子を飢餓と混乱から遠ざけるため所長と結婚をする。そして外地から寄せ集められた「よきアーリアン」であるフランツと美声を持つエーリヒを引き取り、混沌に向かう外界から切り離された生活に安住していく。何よりも、誰よりもこの子のために....。そして所長である夫クラウスは、狂気を内包した研究者でありカストラートを信奉する。世俗的倫理がなんだ、ナチ政権の行方がなんだ...

思い返せば少ない人物による物語。しかし、蜘蛛の糸が幾重にも織り込まれた物語が展開していくのである。 非常に美しく幻想的な小説。静かで少々変化に乏しいかもしれない「1」ではあるけれど、これがなければ15年後はあり得ない。まこと騙し絵のような.....

ラスト近くで思わず「騙されたぁ~」と声が出るほど、うまく騙してもらえて嬉しい読書でした。中心となる人々にいろいろ思うことはありますが、何を書いてもネタばれしそうなので割愛。小道具は不気味なものを取りそろえているのですが、最後まで表面上の「美」で覆われて気になりませんでした。というか欲を言えば、もっと地底のおどろおどろしさを出してもらってもよかったかなぁ。

第二時大戦をドイツの側から見る不思議さ。日本のいわゆる庶民感覚を全面に努力忍耐を押し出したものを考えると新鮮でした。というか。どうも、今少し後に残るものがなかったち§すね。思い返して絶対的に不足するのは、登場人物の迫力ではないかと。執念、偏執さが足りない。それは、手記でない部分は誰が書いたのか、を考えると「故意に」省いたのかもしれないけれど不満になってしまいます。

ナチス、人体実験、カストラート等々、耽美な設定の数々と流麗な文体。
前半は素晴らしい。
しかし人称が変わる後半では、展開を急ぐためかそれまでの緻密さが感じられず。
最後のドンデン返しも蛇足と感じられてしまい…。
惜しい。
