　物理学者で俳人でもある著者が、友人の俳句雑誌「柿渋」の巻頭に連載したという短文をまとめたもの。挿絵も自身で書いたというものがついていて、温かな雰囲気です。
　一番はじめに書かれている、「日常生活の世界と詩歌の世界の境界は、唯一枚の硝子板で仕切られている。・・・」ではじまる文章だけでも、読む価値がありました。

・・・・・・・
日常生活の世界と詩歌の世界の境界は、唯一枚の硝子板で仕切られている。
この硝子は、初めから曇って居ることもある。
生活の世界の塵に汚れて曇って居ることもある。

（中略）

稀に、極めて稀に、天の焔を取って来て此の境界の硝子板をすっかり熔かしてしまう人がある。
・・・・・・・

　子猫の話、油絵をかいてみる話、大学構内で出合った親子の話。それぞれ、ただ味わい深いだけでなく、学者的な論理の明確さも、ユーモアも見え隠れしています。「日常と詩歌の境界」の曇りが拭われて、世界が鮮明に見えてくるような気持ちになります。

　著者こそ、「境界の硝子板を溶かしてしまう人」の一人であったのだろう、と思われてなりません。科学に関する他の随想などを読むと、もしかしたら著者はさらに、科学と詩歌（芸術）との境界も溶かしていたのでは、という気にすらなってしまいます。どんな科学者の心にも同じ焔の種はある、と私は思うのですけれど。。。

　もっと著者の随想を読みたい方には同じく岩波文庫で随想集（全五巻）が手頃だと思います。

柿の種、なんとも興味を惹くタイトルではないでしょうか？
ゆっくりゆっくり一ヶ月くらいかけて読みました、まるでその時代に
タイムスリップしたような気になります。ハチ公が生きてたんだ~
秦野に関東大震災でできた湖なんてあるんだ！！
なんて

この本を、読むと身近なことをまた子供のときのように
見てみたいなと、思わされます。

　物理学者の随筆、こう聞いただけで尻込みするかもしれませんが、そんな心配をする必要がない本です。日常の世界でふと立ち止まって「なぜ」ということを問いかけています。例えば、「眼は閉じることができるのに、なんで耳は閉じることができないのだろう」という何気ない問いかけには深い意味合いを感じます。

　中でも「なるほど」と思ったのは、「科学者をいじめるといろいろな発明や発見が生まれる」ということです。
