大学の授業についてアンケートなどによって学生が評価するという、FD制度がいま、さまざまな大学ではじまっている。この本は、東京大学教養学部でのFDの試みが述べられている。「東大の」という点では興味深い点もあるが、FDについていままで書かれてきた報告や著作と比べてとくに目新しいことは書いていない。ただ、この種のほかの本に比べて、読後感が悪い。なぜ悪いのかというと、著者の「オレ様」調の記述が目立つ点だ。たとえば、文科系の学問をばかにしたものいいがあったり、自分の被引用文献数を年齢別に一覧にしたり（被引用数６０００で普通だそうです）、「女子学生に人気がある」と自由記述ランに書かれたとさりげなく自慢するところや、オレに文句を言うなら俺のように人の２倍仕事しろと書くところなどである。しかし、「著名な教育系研究会での統計の使い方がひどい」として、文科系の学問を非難しておきながら、FDの数値を論ずるのに平均値のみで議論していて、分布についての記述がなかったり、自分の論文の引用データのみで、年齢に伴う研究生産性を一般化していたり、１００個以上のデータがないと比較できないなどと理論的な根拠がないことが書いてあったりする。FDに関心がある人は、もっと読後感がよく、しっかりとした提言が書いてある本がたくさんあるので、そちらの本を読むべきだろう。

　数値化、グラフ化したデータを元に、著者が好き勝手なことを述べるより、自由記入欄に書かれた学生のナマの声を収載すべきではないか。そちらの方がずっとおもしろい本になったことだろう。
　学生からの「基礎実験は遅くなるから嫌」という声に対して、著者は「昔はそうじゃなかった。遅くまで自主的に実験していた」という年寄りくさい反論を行っているが、それでは建設的な改善案など出てこない。
　なぜ学生が早く帰りたがっているのか、実験をやりたがらないのかを聞き取り調査して改善に役立てるべきだろう。

大学の授業というのはひどいもので、わけがわからない、役に立たない、つまらないと、散々非難されている。東大でもそれは同じであり、なまじ教授も学生も自意識が過剰なため、「他人のために」というサービス精神が欠けているのが現状だ。

そんな中で、著者の石浦先生は、東大の授業を良くしたいと思っている数少ない東大教授の１人である。教養学部の仕組みから始まり、H13年度から始まった授業評価、そしてその結果及び考察と本書は進む。

内容的には、少々物足りないというかデータが少ない。平均値などの加工済みのデータしかないため、読者がデータを考察する余地はほとんどない。本書を読んだだけで、東大の授業を定性的に評価することはほとんど不可能であろう。
むしろ、東大教授のエッセイ、授業改善への記録として読むと、面白い。データは、文章のためのおまけのようなものである。

大学の授業、そして大学教育のあり方に疑問を持っている教授の奮闘記、それが本書である。
