かっこええ〜。
新聞連載時から気になってはいたが、改めてまとめて読むと、ぐいぐいと物語に引き込まれ、ページをめくるのがもどかしいほどだ。

主人公・藤正太もかっこいいが、嫁の瑠が痺れるほどかっこいい。
博徒稼業をうら若き女性の身で継承した女親分。腹の座っていることといったら比類ない。

小説のエピソードのうちどれだけが事実かは知りようもないし、穿鑿することに意味もないのだが、話半分にせよ北方氏は「ものすごい」曾祖父母を持っておられるのだなぁと感服した。本当に、明治の時代にはこういう人たちがいたのかと思うと嬉しい。

熱い時代の、熱い日本人の物語。読んで損はない。

私、日経新聞を読み始めて２５年、
通勤イコール日経ヨクヨムの生活です。

でも、朝刊の最終面から真っ先に読むってコトは、
滅多にまず無いんです。

だけど、この小説の連載中は、最終面まっしぐら！

ワクワクしながら読んだり、
ヨッシャァ！って、
思わず快哉を胸中に叫んだり、
反対に義憤に拳を固めたり、
ある日は翌日まで、どこか心の中で心配していたり、
またある朝は通勤電車の中で涙が止まらなくなって困ったり・・・

こんな連載小説は初めてでした。

だから、これから、この本を読まれる方は、
そう言う意味で、とってもお幸せだと思います。

疾風怒濤の物語が、
無駄をそぎ落とした強靭な文章に乗って、
我々の琴線を揺り動かしにやって来ます。

「日本の大衆文学の伝統に、新たな地平を切り拓く大傑作」
なんて、月並みとも思われる賛辞が、
ドンピシャで当てはまってしまう、
まさしく読書の至福・醍醐味を味あわせてくれる一冊です。

北方作品は20代のころからハードボイルド，歴史小説と読んできましたが、
今回の作品は、自分の人生にとっての一冊になりました。
宮本輝の「流転の海」・伊集院静の「海峡」シリーズを超える名作の誕生です。
是非、読んでください。
