レイモンド・カーヴァーの創作・人となりに関するエッセイ二つ、ティム・オブライエンのヴェトナム再訪記と短篇二つ、ジョン・アーヴィングのインタビュー記事に、トム・ジョーンズの短編、デニス・ジョンソンのエッセイの計8篇。「アメリカ」作家に関する雑多な文章を村上氏が翻訳、それぞれに短いイントロダクションを付けたもの。村上氏がいつか翻訳しようと溜めていたアメリカの雑誌のスクラップの中から、特に気に入ったものをチョイスしたとのこと。村上氏の関心の方向性、創作の源流がどこにあるのかが伝わってくるコンピレーションです。

死後10年経って、カーヴァーの創作の謎に迫るエッセイもなかなか良かったですが、ティム・オブライエンのヴェトナム再訪記にはへこみました。ヴェトナム戦争も過去のこととして、歴史の闇に葬られていますが、多くの人にとってはいまだ現在形なのでしょう。ちょっと背筋が寒くなる内容です。それから、ジョン・アーヴィングの人となりが伝わってくるインタビューと、トム・ジョーンズの説明の付かないエネルギーに満ちた短編（タイトルは "I am a... Genius!"）もしびれます。

文中にもありましたが、ブルースの名曲、「ストーミー・マンデイ」の歌詞、"They call it stormy Monday, but, Tuesday's just as bad." からタイトルを取っています。

村上氏は、自分についての評論は読まないと言うことですが、他人に関してのものは読んでいるようです。他人事は、ただただ興味深いということなのでしょうか。いずれにせよ、どの文章をとっても一級の書き物で、それぞれに味わい深い、濃い内容の一冊です。現代アメリカ文学が好きなら、お勧めです。

　カヴァーがどうしてあんなに書き直したのかが不思議でした｡あんなに長さが変わるなんて、普通の作家では考えられないことでした。リッシュの力というか、編集者の力の凄さが感じられました。 　どこまでがオリジナルで、どこまでが新たな創作なのか、カヴァーの謎は深まるばかりです。 　ところで、この題名の意味は？
