吉上 恭太
1957年東京に生まれる。野球の週刊誌や児童書の編集を経て、現在は翻訳、編集のかたわら、ギターばかり弾いている

本書は、ファンタジーやホラー、宇宙人モノなど

多彩な作品を執筆する著者による児童向きのＳＦ作品。


妹を交通事故で失った主人公が

不思議な老人から手渡されたタイムマシンを使い

過去を変えようと奮闘する物語です。


主人公の妹や友人を思う気持ちもさることながら

運命を変えようとすることは、より大きな運命の一部なのか―？

というＳＦ的、哲学的な疑問を抱きつつも

そこに拘泥することなく

自分の選択がよいものであることを願い、

信じようとする姿に強く心を打たれました。



また終盤、過去を変えようとした主人公は

大きな代償を支払うことになり

さらに、今後何十年もかかるであろう「義務」を負うことになります。

しかし、大きな悲劇と過去への旅を経験し大きく成長した彼からは、

それに耐られるであろう強さが感じ取ることができ、とても頼もしく感じます。


児童書の範疇にとどまらない重大な問いかけや

大切な教訓を与えてくれる本作

児童書というだけで敬遠することなく、

多くの方に読んでいただければ―と思います。

第５５回全国青少年読書感想文コンクールの課題図書ですが
まず課題図書にして全国で大々的に売りさばくような本ではないですね
３流のSFといったところです

それに本作りの拙さ…

ブラム・ストーカー賞をとったということでもわかるように
悪夢のように事態が展開していく緊張感がこの本の持ち味なはずです
それなのにこの本に杉田比呂美さんの絵をつけるセンスの悪さ…
驚くばかりです
杉田さんの絵はとても大好きなのですが
この本に関しては本の持ち味を完全に殺してしまっています

装丁をもうちょっとホラーにすれば楽しめたかもしれません
