日本語は、音声だけではなく漢字の映像が加わって伝達される”テレビ型言語”だと解説して、漢字廃止論や訓読み廃止論を厳しく批判、日本の対外発言力が弱い理由を、対外交渉体験の極度に少ない歴史に求める。
ここまではほかでも聞いた話だが、著者は一歩進める。
近代の外国語学習は専ら外国の文物を輸入することが目的で、最近は小学生にも英語を教えているが、今後はむしろ日本語を外国人に教え広めることが求められる。日本語を通じて日本の文物を輸出することが安全保障にもなると。
22世紀は日本語が公用語になるという説をどこかで聞いたことがあるが、せっかく政権交代したのだから民主党にはこうした政策を考えて欲しい。
かねがね、日本の本は古今東西の知の宝庫で、欧米の本も大抵は翻訳されているので、アジアの国々は日本語を習えばいいのにと思っていたので、よい本がでたと思う。

「日本語教のすすめ」という題は、いささか刺激的ですが、内容は、むしろ、「日本語よもやま話」というのに近いです。雑誌で連載されていたときは、「日本語万華鏡」という題だったそうですが、それではインパクトが弱いという新潮社の判断で、「日本語教のすすめ」になったのでしょう。
さて、題名のお話はさておき、著者は、普段私たちが使っている日本語という言葉が、いかに面白い言語であるかを、様々な具体例を使いながら、やさしく説き起こしています。
私は、「漢字には、どうして音読みと訓読みという、２種類の読み方があるのか」というのがずっと分からなかったのですが、これがまさしく、日本語が、他の言語に見られない、希有な言語であることの秘密につながるとは、新たな発見でした。
日本語に興味のある人に広く薦めたい本です。

日本に生まれ暮らしていると、その真の価値に意外に気づかず、むしろ「日本はダメだ」と自己卑下や嘆息に陥りがちだが、この本を読んで私たちがいかに稀有な国に生きているか、いかに日本語がわれわれの宝蔵であるかに気づかされる。
身近な話題を取り上げながら日本語の特徴に迫る各章は、あたかも名教授のゼミのようである。「私」と「あなた」、「お母さん」「お姉ちゃん・お兄ちゃん」「お父さん」など、呼称の問題から日本人の人間関係構築の特性を解き明かすくだりは、ことのほか興味深い。「Ｉ」と「私」、「you」と「あなた」の間には、明治以来、深くて大きな溝が横たわっているのだ。
著者の本には以前にも『日本人はなぜ日本を愛せないのか』に感銘を受けたが、本書もまた、本物の知性に触れられる喜びをもたらしてくれる。それは、いまや数少なくなった教養人による名講義であり、新書・選書といった啓蒙書ならではの喜びであろう。
