仏教の解説書でありながら、
アンチ日本仏教的な内容が非常に小気味良い。

仏教の入門書の上級編としてお奨め。

昭和33年初版というのが信じられないほど、
読むたびに新鮮さを感じる。

だが、これは逆に言えば、
日本の仏教界が全く変わっていない
証拠である。

確かに、真言宗の僧侶である著者の視点は
他宗派に対して冷厳であることは否定できない。

しかし、むしろ著者の冷たい目線というのは、
日本仏教全体に対してであろう。
これは近代仏教学の日本仏教に対する目線なのである。

　一般の仏教入門書ではやや手薄な日本仏教の歴史・特徴を知る為に通読。著者の渡辺照宏氏は釈迦仏教原理主義的（？）な立場から、忌憚無く日本仏教の欠点を指摘していて痛快。曰く「たとえば法然、親鸞、日蓮たちのような新興宗派の僧侶たちはだいたい主観的観念的遊戯にふけっていただけで、実質的には何ら民衆の生活を助けることなく、むしろ信者の仕送りによって生活を支えられていた場合が多い。彼らを教祖に仰ぐ教団が優勢になったのは、後継者たちの政治的手腕によるものにすぎない」。又、特に日蓮について「仏教史全体を通じて他に類例のない独善主義であって、仏教の寛容の精神から見て、まったく非仏教的な態度と言わなければならない」や、浄土教について「この末世的な新興宗教を「日本仏教の精華」とよぶような偏見が今でも一部では行われているが、そういうことをいうのは仏教の本質と実践的意味を知らないからである」と実に手厳しい。禅宗や一遍、良寛らに対してはわりと好意的な記述。

　まえがきには同著者による『仏教』（岩波新書）とどちらを先に読んでも良いと書いてあるが、いわば応用編にあたる本書を後に回す方が絶対に良いと思った。尚、本文中に漢文や古文が頻繁に挿入されるのには閉口した。

初めて渡辺照宏の岩波新書の三部作を読んだ時は、
「仏教」や「お経の話」に惹かれた。
本書「日本の仏教」は痛烈に日本の仏教を批判している印象で、
正直言って読みづらかった記憶がある。
だが今は、三冊のなかで本書が興味深く、有意義だと感じる。
それは、本書が「お勉強」のための入門書ではないからだろう。

本書は、筆者の視点からの日本仏教の診断である。
入門書として分かりやすい説明がなされているが、
本書のテーマは、むしろ日本仏教の問題点がどこにあり、
またどこが評価されるべきを明らかにすることである。
批判の目は、日本の仏教のある種のあり方へと向けられるが、
それは現在でも通用している点で、本質をついていると思う。
例えば「渡来僧の冷遇」などは、現在でもほとんど変わって
いないのではないだろうか。

同時に筆者は、日本にも熱心な求道精神をもった本物の僧達
がいたという事実を、共感をもって描いている。
決して批判一色ではなく、歴史的には埋もれていても、
現在の視点から見て評価されるべき事柄には、
ちゃんと注意が向けられている。
このように本書は、これまでの、そして今後の日本の
仏教のあり方について、非常に多くのことを考えさせる、
好著となっている。
